What’s funny is that the same week in the same class, the then dean of the J School at LSU came in the class and said “this is when real journalists are made. If you can’t hack it in this, you can’t hack it at LSU. I hear there is a great (sarcastic) little journalism school at Nicholls State.”

And thus a year later when I started at Nicholls, I changed my major to public relations

2) my journalism class instructor made a comment that he hated that the journalists covering it would be getting paid exponentially less than BP’s PR folks and well “work for BP because when they mess up they mess up big and have to pay PR people a lot of money to fix it” became my career mantra.

Why?

1) I was less interested in how it was being covered in the media and more interested in the messaging from BP and Transocean on responding to it (which was fucking terrible especially from BP) which led to my “niche” in my comms being crisis comms.
