Oubre's career night leads Timberwolves to a crushing victory, in which they own a 2-0 series lead
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (POR :: MIN)
MINNEAPOLIS, April 20 – The Minnesota Timberwolves have taken a 2-0 series lead over the Portland Trail Blazers after Kelly Oubre’s career night of 40 points saw the Timberwolves trash the Trail Blazers, 128-94. Despite Portland making two changes to their starting line-up in game two, they were non-factors. The small forward wasn’t the only solo performance on the court which warranted a career night. While not mesmerizing on offense, Karl Anthony-Towns hurled in 32 rebounds as the glass was heavily in the favour of Minnesota, who outscored Portland by 24 rebounds. The first quarter saw Kelly Oubre Jr. score 17 points as the Timberwolves took a five point lead into the second quarter. “We came out and we played as to how the crowd reacted,” said head coach Ryan Saunders in the post-game press conference. Home court bears a huge advantage in the postseason, one of the perks for finishing as a high seed. They were loud and proud at Target Center, no doubt swaying the momentum in the favour of the Timberwolves. The Trail Blazers have looked sloppy in the first two games. They were broken apart in the third quarter of game one and the second quarter of game two. Damian Lillard started hot before being phased out of the game, finishing with 20 points, having shot 9 of 27 from the field which included just 2 of 10 from deep.
With their backs up against the wall, Portland responded miserably. They started the second quarter 0 of 13 from the field and all four 3-point attempts missing the mark, with the Timberwolves stretching their lead by a further 15 points. Portland didn’t score their first points of the second quarter until five and a half minutes in when Rodney Hood nailed a three point attempt. The Timberwolves outscored the Trail Blazers, 30-15 in the second. This series’ story has been how Minnesota has taken their opportunities and how Portland has floundered, despite coming with the season sweep momentum over the T-Wolves. The Timberwolves were renowned throughout the season for shooting from deep. They haven’t done it terribly much this series. Portland attempted 41 shots from deep against the Timberwolves, scoring just 11 (27%) of those attempts. Minnesota, nailed 11 of their 18 three-pointers (61%). They’ve executed their gameplan masterfully during the series so far. It’s far from over, but they’ve dominated enough to believe there could possibly be a postseason sweep on the cards.
This game will rightfully be remembered as the game which Kelly Oubre dominated. 40 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. A pretty double-double which saw him shoot 3 of 5 from the arc and make 13 of his 31 field goals and 11 of 14 free throws. The game the Timberwolves trade executed back in late December has paid off, sending a first round selection to the Phoenix Suns for the flamboyant small forward, who showed he can be an integral part of this team going forward. Chants of “MVP” reigned out across the crowd as he took his final free throws of the game. Game three will be different. Minnesota won’t have the home court advantage. However, if Portland don’t do something quickly, the Timberwolves won’t need or see their home crowd again this series.
