Nevada rides an unlikely pair of freshmen bigs to the doorstep of the big dance, can they kick the door in?
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

The Nevada Wolfpack hadn't won a game in a month and hadn't won consecutive games in four months as they got ready to play a San Jose State team they had just lost to two weeks ago at home.

The writing was on the wall and the obituary had been typed up already as Isaiah Mohammed's third season at Nevada was an abject failure, squandering a 5-2 start to the year that included a road win at Arizona State to finish the regular season with just five wins in their next twenty-one games, winning just three conference games and now needing to win four straight games to make the NCAA tournament.

They did just that and now play Grambling in another play-in game, this time with a chance to compete for a national championship in sports' craziest tournament.

"We just weren't ready for the season to be over," says true freshman Ira Holloway, "I think its definitely frustrating when you're losing and practicing isn't as fun anymore and the games aren't as fun when you're losing but when you actually have to think about going home and not being able to play anymore, it's definitely not something you want to happen, you want to keep playing."

The freshman center was a bright spot in a bleak season, averaging nine points and six rebounds per game along with 1.6 blocks per game, fourth highest in the WAC. But in the regular season finale, Holloway scored just three points and grabbed 2 boards in the loss to Boise State. Mohammed, a former big man himself, is always hard on his bigs but challenged them specifically ahead of the tournament.

"Own the paint," Holloway says of Mohammed's message, "It's ours, treat like we run it because we do. He really gave us a lot of confidence and challenged us too."

Holloway scored 22 points in the 105-71 win over San Jose State. The next day against Fresno State, he grabbed down sixteen rebounds along with his seventeen points. Holloway's frontcourt running mate, Josip Lewandowski, had eighteen points and two blocks in their win over top seeded Fresno State. Isaac Ridnour, another freshman, also got a lot of run in the eventual blowout win, scoring eleven points and four rebounds.

It would prove to be handy as Lewandowski would sprain his knee early in the semi-finals game against Idaho. Ridnour replaced him, bringing down 16 rebounds with eight of them being on the offensive end. He also scored seventeen points, not to be outdone by Holloway's fifteen or Lewandowski's fourteen, who came back in the second half.

"We push each other," Lewandowski adds, "We go at each other, we lift each other up. We take pride in the offense and defense running through us."

Holloway saved his best for last with a 21 point, 10 rebound performance against Louisiana Tech to win the WAC and qualify for the play-in game despite their now 14-18 record.

Grambling has a talented big in their own right in Ronni Drayton, the seven footer that won conference freshman of the year two seasons ago. He's averaging 15.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game along with 1.5 blocks. It'll be a challenging night for Holloway and Ridnour but one they are welcoming.

"We want the smoke," says a smiling Holloway, "We always want all the smoke, we're with it."

With a magical two weeks, Wolf Pack injected life and optimism into future of program
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Nevada head coach Isaiah Mohammed's decision to call for the trap in the final seconds of the first round matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide will forever haunt him.

"I needed to just let our guys play there," Mohammed said afterwards, "Hindsight is always 20/20 and trapping is part of our identity, it's what we do but in that situation, I should have let them play, that's on me."

The decision to try to trap Devonne Rothseiden would prove to be costly as Rashod Hood left a wide open Jaason McKnight who knocked down the three to beat Nevada 81-80 and avoid the first round upset.

While that decision might have ended their season, Mohammed's other decisions kept it alive a few weeks prior as he changed the rotation and started playing the freshmen more, particularly Isaac Ridnour, Marko Mance and Christano Bitee and running the offense through another freshman in starting center Ira Holloway.

Nevada's once doomed and disappointing season is now a glimpse into a promising future that features all of Nevada's roster returning for another season if they choose to with not a single senior on the roster. By the end of the year, two of the team's five starters -- Ridnour and Holloway -- were freshmen with Ruben Rickert and Manourou Francois being first time starters. With zero scholarships available, Nevada's improvement next season will need to come from within and its well positioned to do so.
