Lakers continue impressive hot streak with victory over Denver

Entering Tuesday night, the Lakers had been playing some of their best basketball of the early season and a matchup against the former champion Denver Nuggets in a in-season group play game was a chance for them to move one step further to solidifying their spot in the knockout stage. With two big second half performances by their superstar duo LeBron and AD, the Lakers remained undefeated in group play with a 106-99 win over the Nuggets. Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 26 points (14 of those in the 3rd quarter), 17 rebounds, five assists, one steal and two blocks. LeBron James finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Austin Reaves put up 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Andre Drummond got the Lakers off to a quick start, scoring their first eight points of the game and finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Reigning MVP, Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jamal Murray scored 18 points and dished out 12 assists while Michael Porter Jr. put up 16 points, hitting 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Former Laker, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 12 points and Aaron Gordon chipped in with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks. The Lakers will wrap up their group play on Friday with a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. With the victory tonight, the Lakers have won their group and will advance to the knockout stage in two weeks. A victory over the Pelicans will almost clearly give them a home game in the quarterfinals.

Lakers defense clamps down in second half with win over Kings

For the second time in the last three games, LeBron James was on the sidelines in street clothes watching his team. Early reports have James sitting out quite a few games coming up on the schedule and if the Lakers play the way they did tonight against Sacramento, it might be just a win-win situation. Opening the season with a 103-88 loss to Sacramento, the Lakers were looking to even up the season series and after a win against the Nuggets the night before, the Lakers were looking to make it two in a row. After a very sluggish first half in which the Lakers trailed by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, Anthony Davis led a defensive stand second half comeback with a team-high 39 points, 19 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, leading the Lakers to a 100-91 victory. Austin Reaves scored a season-high 29 points, hitting 10-of-20 shots from the field including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. De'Aaron Fox, the 4th leading scorer in the league led the Kings with a game-high 40 points and dished out 12 assists.
Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and eight rebounds, but it was the Lakers swarming defense that changed the whole game. In the first half, the Kings shot 50% from the field and hit 8-of-22 three-pointers, however in the second half the Kings shot 35% (14-of-40) and hit 6-of-19 from the three-point line.
