March came early as Howard did the unthinkable behind their improbable center

Since he first learned the concept of the position, Howard's Schuyler Sinville has wanted to be a franchise left tackle in the NFL. His dreams, aspirations and journey instead landed him in the center of college basketball's biggest upset of its young season.

Howard, behind an improbable leader in Sinville, upset #6 Texas on Friday night in a game where the Longhorns trailed at the half but then opened the second quarter with eight straight unanswered points. Under second-year head coach Isaiah Mohammed, the Bison would rally back and at one point lead the game by seven points before Texas made it interesting with a couple of big threes from Justin Adams and A.J. Abrams but it was too little, too late as Howard finished the job.

They wouldn't have done it without Sinville and his 34 points and Sinville almost wasn't going to be playing basketball this fall. He had focused on football while at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia and didn't take basketball seriously until his senior season as he struggled with putting on the weight required to be a D-1 offensive linemen.

Sinville had a few D-II offers and interest from top JUCO programs but instead chose to attend Howard University along with his longtime girlfriend. He was prepared to put basketball and athletics as a whole in his rearview mirror but at six-foot-ten, it was nearly impossible.

"It might have been my second day on campus," says Sinville of his first encounter with a student equipment manager for the basketball team.

The equipment manager convinced Sinville to try out and after a few sloppy practices where Sinville wasn't even able to make it to the end, Sinville would be running with the starters by the end of summer camp.

Sinville would start in the opener and score 30 points in his college debut and followed it up with a 34-point performance against Texas. His career high at Lake Taylor? 18 points.

"It's been a crazy few weeks, few months. I'm just taking it day by day," says Sinville of his newfound stardom.

Howard plays North Dakota State on Saturday.
