League Meetings: Seattle and Las Vegas NBA Franchises Approved

SECAUCUS, NJ --- Seattle and Las Vegas will be rejoining and joining the NBA family respectively, following a 24 to 6 vote in favour of the league's expansion to 32 teams by the owners at the league's annual meeting. Seattle will return to their SuperSonics moniker, however the history of the franchise for now will still be owned by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Las Vegas team will be called the Jacks, playing off the playing cards oriented name of their WNBA team the Aces. An expansion draft will take place later in the offseason in which both Vegas and Seattle will be allowed to fill their rosters by selecting unprotected players from the other 30 franchises in a snake-format draft.

With the addition of these two franchises, the NBA has also had to realign its divisions. The Seattle SuperSonics will join the Northwest Division, with the Oklahoma City Thunder being bumped out of that division and moved to the Southwest. The New Orleans Pelicans from the Southwest division will move to the Southeast division, sending one of the league's marquee stars, Zion Williamson, to the Eastern Conference. The Washington Wizards will join the Atlantic. The Las Vegas Jacks will join the California teams and Phoenix Suns in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference.

In other news, some other changes are coming to the league. The playoffs will still feature the top 8 teams from each conference, however they will be seeded 1-16 without consideration from which conference they come from. This is expected to allow for more interesting matchups and also account for the consistent lack of parity between the two conferences. The league experimented with a return to the pre-2003 5-game 1st round format in the playoffs as well as a 58 game schedule (now 62), and those will be remaining for the 2021-22 season. The Rising Stars Game will no longer be USA vs. the World and return to being a Rookie vs. Sophomores showcase.

Finally, the NBA Draft Lottery has been drastically altered, in fact, it has been abolished. The 16 teams that do not make the playoffs will compete in a single elimination tournament, with their place in that tournament determining their draft position. The 16 playoff teams will make their selections in reverse order of their overall record. This is meant to completely remove the concept of tanking from the NBA and force every team to remain as competitive as possible. This change will take effect in the 2022 NBA offseason.
