Bus Drivers and Bus Riders

My family and I were seated in the dining room at my aunt and uncle’s place after our win over Brooklyn tonight. We opted against going to a restaurant since my grandparents were in town. They were going to stay in the city until Thanksgiving. The only people that were missing were Devin and Carmen. They both had late flights to Los Angeles, so they left shortly after seeing Uncle Derek get his ring.

“Auntie, this lasagna is delicious.”

“I would hope so, you damn near ate the whole pan by yourself, Deuce,” my uncle said.

“Eat as much as you want, baby boy.” She turned to my uncle. “I gotta feed the bus driver.”

“The what, babe?”

“The bus driver. The Knicks are rolling right now and it’s mainly because of Noah. He’s leading the league in scoring right now. He’s driving the proverbial bus. I mean even tonight, he had a double-double. Almost had 40 points.”

I smirked as I watched my uncle think about what she was implying.

“So, what are you saying? That I’m just a passenger?”

“Well, you’re averaging about twelve points per game. The lowest I’ve seen you average in your career. Even playing behind Derrick Rose.” She said as she went to get the dessert from the oven. My grandmother’s famous sweet potato pie. Thanksgiving came early this year.

“The boy is balling, D.” My grandpa chimed in. “It’s early, but my grandson is giving big MVP energy.” This was only adding fuel to the fire.

“What you know about having big energy, Pop Pop?” I asked as I reached for my plate of pie. I was trying to change topics.

“I’m playing Sixth Man!” Now they had him wound up.

“Twelve points per game, baby. And I’m sure you’re better than the other guys playing Sixth Man on their teams. I mean, I remember when you first went back to Chicago, you scored what? Like 55 points?”

“It was 58,” I chuckled.

“Noah, don’t start.” My mom elbowed me in the ribs.

“The fuck are you laughing at, man?”

“Language, Derek.” My grandmother cut in, causing everyone at the table to laugh a little harder. It didn’t matter how old we were, Grandma Baldwin commanded her respect.

“Sorry, Mama. But I am playing Sixth Man. How is she gonna try and play me like that? And I was 29 years old when I played that game.”

“Look, Unc, I know you’re playing reduced minutes and all that shit.”

“Noah!”

“Stuff! My bad, Grandma. And stuff. But I think your wife and your fans are just used to a little more razzle dazzle, baby. I’m not judging you though.” I walked over to the kitchen to grab a glass of milk to go with my second piece of pie.

“You know there’s room for all on my bus.” I say as I return to the table.

“It’s time for you to take your pie and get your ass back across the bridge.”

“Derek!”

“Come on, Mama. He’s antagonizing me. He left the table only to come back a few minutes later and put his championship ring on the table. "Bus rider? I built the damn bus! Wouldn't be a bus for him to drive if it weren't for me!”

"New team, new season, my guy. I got the keys now."

I know I’m gonna pay for that later. It’ll be worth it though. I really want him to get that Sixth Man of the Year Award. And Defensive Player of the Year. And a championship.
