A Night Off After an Off Night

The locker room was quiet. We were just blown out by the New Orleans Pelicans. Of all the teams we’ve played this season, the Pelicans were the ones to hang an L on us. Everybody was just sitting in front of their locker waiting for Coach Silas to come in and address the team. When he finally walked in, he didn’t say anything. Derek actually spoke first.

“How you feeling, Noah?”

“What kind of question is that? Were you not at this game?”

“What about you, big fella?” He pointed to Chet.

“Can’t believe we lost. New Orleans probably won’t even make the playoffs.”

“Ant?” He kept going around the room.

A few guys echoed the same sentiments. They were upset that we lost to New Orleans, they were upset that the streak was over.

“Well, I am glad it’s over,” he said. Everybody just kind of looked at him like he had grown a second head. “I’m not glad that we lost. The season is a grind. Fatigue was going to catch up to us eventually. And I can’t speak for y’all, but I was tired as hell tonight. Going undefeated for an entire season has never been done and with good reason. I know you young guys are feeling invincible right now. But tonight was New Orleans’ night. We played a whole game against Boston and took the red eye to New Orleans. Don’t beat yourselves up. We wanted two things this season: home court advantage in the playoffs and--”

“The Larry O’Brien,” I said nodding.

“That’s it. Fuck this streak.” He smiled. Everybody in the room laughed. “It was fun, but that’s not endgame for us. We got a couple days off, right, Coach?”

“That’s right.”

“If y’all are up for it, I got the folks at Dooky Chase to open up for us tonight, so we can have our team dinner undisturbed. We got the whole place. We’re gonna head to Fulton Alley after that and just hang out and bowl. Take a night off. Get our minds off this loss. Let’s celebrate setting a new win streak record. We’ll head back to New York tomorrow afternoon. Chins up, fellas. Championship is still on the table. Let’s get back to business. Bring it in.”

The mood in the locker room had shifted considerably as Uncle D had sort of put everything in perspective for us. We had to block out the media hype. As everyone was heading to the showers or to talk to the media he yelled out, “Hope y’all asses can bowl a ball better than y’all shot it tonight!”

“Strike! I thought you were bringing your A-game tonight, Cap?” Anthony Howard asked my uncle as he bowled his first strike of the night, putting him ahead of Chet.

“It’s only the sixth frame, youngster.”

My uncle was currently in third place, but he didn’t seem worried.

I opted out and was sitting at the bar with Remy nursing a root beer.

“How does he do that, man? I was pissed. We were all pissed. Now we just out here bowling like we won tonight.” Remy said.

“He’s been around a long time. He’s seen a lot. He knows you can’t win ‘em all. As long as you win the one that matters.”

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Kori. She sent me a sad face emoji and said she was sorry about the loss. Then she asked what she could do to make me feel better.

“You smiling big, my boy. That’s Ms. Hilliard?”

“Yeah. She was just texting about the game.”

“You don’t smile like that after a loss. What she say?”

“She said she’s going to make me feel better when we get back to New York.”

“Let me find out you got a lil freak on your hands.”

“Nah, you won’t ever find that out. You haven’t heard from Iris tonight?”

“Yeah, I talked to her before we left for Dooky Chase. Man, that food was so good. Better than I remember. How did Derek hook that up?”

“Come on, man. He’s Derek Baldwin.”

“True that. And he paid for all this tonight?”

“Yep. It’s all on him. He said he just wanted us to relax tonight.”

“And I meant that,” my uncle’s voice came from behind us. “Why are y’all just posted up over here? And put that phone down. You’ll see Kori tomorrow.”

“Like you haven’t talked to Aunt Naya at least three times tonight. Don’t forget, I’ve been around for the whole relationship. I was young, but I wasn’t that damn young.”

“I just called to check on my babies. Jordan wants some of Mama’s pralines. I haven’t talked to my wife tonight. Saving that for when I get back to the hotel later.”

Remy and I laughed.

“Seriously, fellas. Ain’t nothing better than settling down with a good woman. Somebody who understands you at the end of the day. All I gotta do is focus on the work, even with her career, she still takes care of everything else.”

“Thirteen years and you still whipped, Unc.”

He shrugged. “You’ll know what I’m talking about soon enough. Check my numbers. I averaged no less than 30 a game from the time I made it to Los Angeles. I was settled.”

“How many drinks you had tonight, Cap?” Remy asked. “You waxing real poetic over here.”

He smiled. “One or three. That damn Lobos tequila got me right tonight. Hear me though, put this loss behind you. Denver is gonna feel it Saturday.”

“Hey, Cap!” Anthony yelled from across the bowling alley. “You can’t beat me and not give me a chance to win my money back.”

“How much money has he lost to you?”

My uncle smirked. “Just two grand. Rookie contract.”

This is exactly why Remy and I decided to stay out of it. Anthony has no idea who he is dealing with. His pockets will be empty by the time we get back to New York if he keeps this up.

“Double or nothing?” My uncle says.

“That’s what’s up.”

“Sucker.” Remy laughed.

“Kid’s gotta learn.”

I looked around at my teammates. Everybody seemed to put the loss behind them and were just being in the moment. We needed a night off. Last season, we didn’t do a lot of hanging out as a team outside of practice. This is just as important as practice. Maybe more. Even at this level.
