Dudes eat a lot. As long as Derek Baldwin is on the squad, the Nets are set!

NBA COMBINE

Noah Baldwin II Brings Strong Lineage to the NBA

Image

Noah Baldwin II is the nephew of current NBA guard Derek Baldwin. Like his uncle, Noah took the road less travelled and walked on to the St. John’s Red Storm basketball team just two years ago. After being sidelined due to academic reasons during his freshman year, everyone had pretty much written him off until his phoenix-like return his sophomore season leading the Red Storm to the top of the Big East and all the way to the Elite Eight just two months ago. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have his uncle’s height as he stands 4 inches shorter at 6’2”, but he is a decent size for an NBA point guard and has speed to boot.

While Baldwin’s combine numbers weren’t overly impressive, combine numbers do not indicate whether a player will be a successful pro. Summer league, pre-season, and finally playing in an NBA game will be much more revealing than any combine performance.

Another example regarding how a combine performance can be irrelevant, according to multiple tweets Baldwin had strong workouts with the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks.

Strengths: Ability to finish in traffic
Noah Baldwin’s ability to finish through contract and traffic in the paint is superb. Considering Baldwin stands at 6’2” makes his finishing ability that much more impressive. He barrels through the lane in Russell Westbrook fashion and bring defenders off their feet. If he can finish with the same proficiency in the NBA, Baldwin will have a lengthy and successful pro career.

Basketball IQ
Noah Baldwin uses his basketball IQ to take advantage of opponent weaknesses. He is a true student of the game and enters knowing what the opposing guards can and cannot do. And one has to attribute that to studying at the feet of one of the best wing players the NBA has seen in his uncle, Derek Baldwin. He seemed to know what he needed to do for his team to win. Having the skills to do all those things is only half the battle. Knowing when and how much of the different aspects of the game to affect is the other half, and that is the half Baldwin excels at. Winning the Big East Championship and advancing deep into the NCAA Tournament had a lot to do with the strength of his teammates' outside shooting. However, even that stems from Baldwin’s ability to draw in defenses.

When this happens, he still has the court awareness to locate the player with the best chance of scoring.

Weaknesses: Needs to Develop an Outside Shot
Noah Baldwin has potential to be a real threat if he can become a true three-level scorer. He averaged less than 40% from beyond the arc and he didn’t take very many shots from behind the arc. Of course the ones he did take were often wide open or in clutch moments for the Red Storm, so according to highlight reels it would seem like he can drain them at a high clip. But it’s a shot that he shies away from.

He can’t be perfect. Gotta get that shot down.

He be will learn the importance of the three ball soon enough. Can’t play exactly like Unc when you’re 4 inches shorter.
