Another uncompetitive game as Rutgers is rolled by Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- -- Rutgers (5-13, 1-8 Big Ten) took to the road Wednesday to take on #13 Michigan State (15-4, 8-2 Big Ten) and lost 77-59. Rutgers turned the ball over 26 times in the contest and shot 3 of 13 from three point range, while allowing the Spartans to shoot 52%. Michigan State was led by senior guard Deon Smith who came into the game averaging 20.1 points per game and is one of the nation's top free throw shooters at just over 90%. Smith had 17 points in this one on 6-10 shooting including 3 of 5 threes.

For Rutgers, senior center Cedric Alexander was a bright spot as he put up 20 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 6 of 8 from the line. Junior forward Tim Pettaway was the only other Scarlet Knight in double figures with 12 points on 5-6 shooting and 2-3 from three. The freshman guard combo of Reginald Weaver and Curtis Green continued their struggles, turning the ball over a combined 11 times. The pair are averaging a total of 7.4 turnovers per game on the season.

Senior forward Melvin Lytle, who leads the team in rebounding at 5.2 per game and is second in scoring at 9.1 points per game suffered an injury in the game. Coach William Walters did not seem too concerned in his post game press conference. He said that Lytle would probably be day-to-day.

Rutgers' next game is at home against Northwestern (9-8, 4-4 Big Ten) on January 27.

Rutgers suffers another home loss, this time to Northwestern 76-60

Piscataway, Nj -- -- Senior forward Andrew Jackson put up 19 points and 9 rebounds as Northwestern (10-8, 5-4 Big Ten) beat Rutgers (5-14, 1-9 Big Ten) 76-60. This game was more competitive than some of the recent Scarlet Knight contests, as Rutgers did manage to hang around in single digits some minutes into the second half. Ultimately, however, the result was the same as before with Northwestern pulling away to win by 16.

For Rutgers, freshman guard Curtis Green led scoring with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Melvin Lytle struggled in the game, putting up only 3 points on 1 for 7 shooting while turning the ball over 8 times.

Next, Rutgers goes on the road to take on Ohio State (13-7, 6-3 Big Ten) on February 1.
