Rutgers beaten down at home by Minnesota
PISCATAWAY, Nj -- -- Minnesota (14-2, 5-1 Big Ten) jumped out to a 27-7 lead in the first ten minutes of the game and cruised from there to a 78-61 victory. The Gophers outscored the Rutgers Scarlet Knights () 45-26 in the first half as the hapless Knights turned the ball over 18 times in the period. Rutgers played far better in the second half but it was too little, too late.
"Hold onto the friggin' ball" said Coach Walters after the game.
Minnesota was led by forward Dustin Clark who put up 17 points and 5 assists. For Rutgers, junior forward Tim Pettaway led the way with 10 points. Senior forward Melvin Lytle was held to just 7 on 3-9 shooting in 29 minutes of action.
Rutgers next game is on January 23 at home against #6 Illinois (17-2, 6-2 Big Ten). Rutgers lost to Illinois 79-71 on the road on January 5.
