Howard hires former Georgetown player, assistant Mohammed as new basketball coach
Associated Press

Washington D.C. -- Howard University has named Georgetown assistant coach Isaiah Mohammed as its next head basketball coach.

A native of Washington, D.C., Mohammed's resume proves he may be the perfect man to rebuild Howard’s struggling basketball program. As an assistant coach, he helped lead Georgetown to five postseason appearances, and was also head coach of his alma mater, Dunbar High School in Washington D.C., for five seasons.

Prior to his coaching career, Mohammed won a national championship with Georgetown under legendary head coach John Thompson Jr. Following a brief stint in the NBA and his tenure as Dunbar's head coach, Mohammed returned to coach under Thompson as an assistant and was an instrumental figure in the recruitment and development of future NBA star Allen Iverson.

Following Thompson's retirement in 1999, Mohammed would be reunited with Iverson as he served as an assistant coach on Larry Brown's staff -- who he had played for during his tenure with the Knicks -- with the Philadelphia 76ers where the team made the NBA Finals in Mohammed's first-year. When Brown took the head coaching job in Detroit, Mohammed followed him there where they won an NBA Finals championship in 2004 and made another appearance in the Finals that following year.

Mohammed, 43, returned to college basketball last year as an assistant under head coach John Thompson III where the Hoyas made the postseason for the first time since 2001. He'll be trying to do the same for the Bison, who haven't made the postseason since 1992 and won just sixteen games in two seasons under Gil Jackson.
