Close but no cigar as Wolf Pack run out of steam against Golden Eagles
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

The Nevada Wolf Pack were exhausted as Southern Miss had extended their lead once more to double digits. Nevada had already rallied back from a double digit deficit in the first half to enter halftime up 52-48 but with leading scorer Ray Kraemer hobbled with a knee injury and Nevada's tight rotation, the Wolf Pack looked flat as they once again found themselves staring at another steep mountain.

"Step up and make some plays," says Armon Johnson of Nevada head coach Isaiah Mohammed's message to him, "You need to make something happen."

Johnson did, scoring seventeen of his 25 points in the second half to get Nevada back into the game and had Tyrone Hanson went 5-of-12 from three instead of 4-of-12, they'd be playing No. 3 Syracuse tomorrow night.

Nevertheless, Mohammed's first season with the Wolf Pack is a success, taking an eleven win team to the NCAA tournament where they beat two Power 5 teams in Arizona and No. 1 seed Florida. En route to the tourney, Nevada also won the WAC, both in the regular season and in the tournament.

What now?

Nevada is returning only two starters next season in Johnson and Rashod Hood, who had eleven points, four rebounds, eleven assists and six steals in the Sweet Sixteen. The only other two returning players that even played in the tournament is walk-on point guard Ruben Rickert and swingman Malik Cook. Both players averaged under eight minutes per game this season.

Their success next season will rely on their top two guards and how effectively Mohammed is able to recruit and reload a roster that is losing five of it's top seven scorers from last season.

Zoric, Lewandowski commit to the Wolf Pack as Mohammed looks for McGee's replacement
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Three-star JUCO point guard Jerimie Zoric and two-star center Josip Lewandowski have committed to the Nevada Wolf Pack, becoming the first recruiting wins for Nevada head coach Isaiah Mohammed.

Zoric, who is originally from Carson City, picked the in-state Wolf Pack over Montana State. He'll likely be competing for the backup point guard spot which was held last season by walk-on freshman Ruben Ricker. Listed at six-foot-two, Zoric is a well rounded but limited athletically which could hamper his potential to ever be a full-time starter for Nevada.

Nevada will look to replace JaVale McGee with Pomona's Lewandowski who at six-foot-ten and 234 pounds, is an instant impact player as the team desperately needed some height following McGee's graduation. He's not the athlete that McGee was but in a few years, Lewandoski could be a walking double digit rebounder with his length and strength.

Zoric's commitment was major as Tahj Moreno out of Brooklyn committed to La Salle over the Wolf Pack. Moreno was Nevada's top point guard target on the board prior to his commitment.

Nevada might not be done in the backcourt as they have offers out to French guard Manorou Francois and two California prospects in Chase Bauer and Shane Ball. Francois and Ball are capable of playing either guard positions and are being recruited as such while the Nevada coaching staff viewer Bauer as an off-ball player.

Bauer signs with Wolf Pack as Riverside land talented center in Emmett
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Three-star shooting guard Chase Bauer has committed to Nevada while three-star center Ashtyn Emmett chose UC-Riverside over the Wolf Pack.

The six-foot-three guard out of Glendale, California is a long-time Nevada target that Isaiah Mohammed and his staff were able to land. A solid scorer that shot 34 percent from the three-point line but just 32 percent from the field during his senior season, Bauer will need to develop his game and become a more well rounded player if he wants to crack the rotation and be a solid contributor.

Bauer's defense could get him on the floor earlier than expected but it remains to be seen if that will be the case.

With the Wolf Pack losing out on Emmett, they have official offered Inglewood center Haim Modica who has a similar athletic profile but isn't as polished.

Nevada closes signing day strong with three commitments in francois, ball and modica
Jerry Howard -- reno gazette journal sports writer

After struggling on the recruiting trail with the howard bison, isaiah mohammed was able to get it done in his first full cycle as nevada's head coach.

the wolf pack landed three more commitments on the final week of the signing period, landing four-star international player manorou francois out of france along with two more california players in guard shane ball and center haim modica.

francois, who played his high school season in orlando, florida, played his sophomore and junior season in montreal where he averaged over sixteen points per game. he's a bit undersized at six-foot-one for his playing style which includes a lot of slashing to the rim and mid range shots so it remains to be seen how his game translates to the next level.

the same can be said for ball and modica as ball is a streaky shooter while modica, at this point in his development, still relies almost exclusively on his six-foot-ten frame to be able to rebound and finish close the rim.
