Howard's first season under Mohammed is a puzzling quagmire on improvement

Howard's men's basketball team season came to an end on Thursday following a disappointing loss to rival Hampton on the road as the Pirates got their revenge on the Bison who had beaten them one week before.

The win over Hampton was Howard's third in four games and set them up with a chance to qualify for the MEAC Tournament. Instead, they dropped three straight to N.C. A&T, Norfolk State before losing the season finale to Hampton.

The Bison finished the season with eight wins in Isaiah Mohammed's first season as head coach, one less than last year under Gil Jackson and one more than Jackson's inaugural season as head coach of the Bison.

An incredibly inconsistent team, Howard started the season 0-6 before beating Navy and Northwestern as their first two wins. The offense never got going, averaging 64.7 points per game which is under the NCAA average by four points. They shot just 40 percent from the field and their offensive efficiency ranked 12th in the conference and 327th in the country.

Defensively, Howard seemed to find their identity when conference play began with a lot of pressure and trapping. They finished eight in the conference in defensive efficiency and 206th in the country which isn't anything to write home about but certainly vastly better than their offense.

Howard dealt with a ton of injuries to key players with arguably their three best players -- Curtis White, Randy Hampton and Eugene Myatt -- losing time due to injury. The upshot? All three are underclassmen and returning next season, as will all of their starters and rotational players except for reserve guard Jeron Smith, a former walk-on who averaged 11.8 minutes per game and 3.8 points per game.
