Could Nevada men's basketball head coach Isaiah Mohammed be on the move?
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Nevada Wolf Pack head basketball coach Isaiah Mohammed has been linked to the recent opening at James Madison to be their next head coach.

The Dukes went 9-22 last season in the Colonial but their location, two hours away from Washington D.C, might make it appealing for Mohammed. Mohammed is a D.C. native and played and coached at Georgetown as an assistant.

Mohammed's first head coaching job was at Howard University, also in the D.C. area with Nevada being his first stop in his coaching career east of Detroit where he spent two seasons there as an assistant with the Pistons.

Loyola-Marymount is also reportedly interested in interviewing Mohammed for their opening.

As the Elite Eight kicks off, Nevada fans are reminded just how close they were and how far they now are
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Nevada senior guard Armon Johnson kept looking up at the scoreboard, wishing for two numbers to be a bit higher -- the team's total points scored and the amount of time left in the game.

The Wolf Pack would run out of time against Utah State in the WAC Semi Finals and out of gas, undone by a nineteen point first half that reminded Johnson of his twelve-point, 5 of 22 performance in the opener against Montana when the team scored just 21 first half points against the Grizzlies.

"We definitely improved since then," said Johnson during his last presser as a Wolf Pack, "But just not enough."

A lot of things went wrong for Nevada in their fourteen win season just a year removed from making it to the Sweet Sixteen and within a shot of advancing. They started the season losing nine of their first ten games and after losing several five of their top seven scorers to graduation, spent the first month of the season stumbling around for an identity.

They eventually found it in Johnson who averaged 22.6 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds per game. The only problem? Nevada is now once again losing its top player -- Johnson -- along with three of its top four scorers in Johnson, Malik Cook and Brandon Fields. There are no clear replacements as outside of Rashod Hood and Josip Lewandowski, none of the underclassmen were consistent parts of the rotation.

"Every year you need to reload and find a way," says Mohammed of losing his top player once more, "It happens to almost every school in the country, you're not going to return three, four of your best five each season, it doesn't work that way. No one's going to be feel bad for you."

With zero commits in the class at this time, next season could be an even tougher one for Wolf Pack fans.

Mohammed to remain with Nevada despite offers from Loyola Marymount, Eastern Michigan
Jerry Howard -- Reno Gazette Journal Sports Writer

Nevada Wolf Pack head basketball coach Isaiah Mohammed has been extended for three more seasons after interviewing with Loyola Marymount and Eastern Michigan, among others, for their head coach openings.

Mohammed finished his second season at Nevada with just fourteen wins, failing to make the tournament after a Sweet Sixteen run the year before but was a coveted candidate among the mid-majors, drawing interest from Georgia State, James Madison, Davidson and Coastal Carolina. Ultimately, Mohammed only met with Loyola Marymount and Eastern Michigan before deciding to return to Nevada for his third season.

Nevada add depth with six additions to the roster with recruiting class
Jerry Howard -- reno gazette journal sports writer

Nevada struck out last season with only two of their six additions to the roster getting into the rotation in Josip Lewandoski and Haim Modica, two of their lowest ranked signings whose size got them some burn last year.

The Wolf Pack are aiming for better contributions from last cycle's class and this year which was led by California three-star Marko Mance, the highest ranked high school signing in Isaiah Mohammed's first two classes.

Mance has good size for the small forward position at six-foot-six and 216 pounds with active hands on defense both as an on-ball defender and when in rotation. He'll need to improve as a shooter if he's going to develop into a legitimate two-way player for the Wolf Pack and is likely looking at a limited role as a freshman.

Another signing that could have a role is Ira Holloway, the three-star power forward out of North Dakota. Holloway is a good athlete with a solid jumper at six-foot-ten that can stretch the floor and do a little bit of everything as a big. He needs to continue strengthening up his body to hold up to the pounding but with his length, he could compete for minutes at both power forward and center.

The other additions are likely to be redshirted in two-stars Isaac Ridnour, Jakob Sommerville and Jeffrey Kandji. All six-foot-seven and above, Mohammed and the coaching staff are looking to revamp how the forward position looks by continuing to add size to their front court.

Perhaps the biggest unknown is Christiano Bitee, the intriguing undersized combo guard out of Cameroon. There's not a ton of tape on Bitee but he impressed Miami's coaching staff enough that they invited him for an official visit. The Hurricanes eventually cooled off the recruitment and Nevada was able to sweep in.
