Freeman brothers spurns Texas A&M, LSU and commit to Texas Southern
Tim Harvey -- Bleacher Report Writer

Jeremiah Freeman announced Friday he's committed to play college basketball at Texas Southern along with his older brother Joseph Freeman III in an effort to spark a movement of more top recruits choosing historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Freeman, a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 overall player in the 2021 class in 247Sports' composite rankings, selected the Tigers amid offers from Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas and others.

The 6-foot-3 guard showed up to his announcement wearing a maroon suit with all signs pointing to Freeman committing to Texas A&M and his brother, a center at Ranger College, being projected to sign with Missouri State. Shortly after Freeman's commitment to the Tigers, Freeman III announced his commitment as well to Texas Southern via social media.

Beyond wanting to put HBCUs on the map, both Freeman brothers highlighted their relationship with Texas Southern head coach Johnny Jones, who tried to recruit Freeman III when he was at LSU.

"We just have a really good relationship with the staff and coach Jones," said Freeman of their joint commitment, "We didn't really plan it, to be honest. We were just talking about schools and Texas Southern just kept coming up, kept coming up. Both of our parents were there, I had the best visit going there so at some point it became 'why not?' and there wasn't a good reason not to go there."

The Tigers finished last season 17-9 and in the SWAC Tournament, they defeated Alcorn State, Jackson State, and Prairie View A&M to win the SWAC Championship. They received a automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Mount St Mary’s in the First Four before losing in the First Round to Michigan.

The Case for Number One: Texas Southern's Jeremiah Freeman
Jaden O'Connor -- The Ringer NBA Columnist

If you ask Texas Southern point guard Jeremiah Freeman who he emulated growing up, he'll mention another Texas native in Sacramento's De'Aaron Fox (feeling old yet?). So why not pair the two to give the Kings one of the most dynamic and electric backcourt?

It likely won't and shouldn't happen but if the Kings go end up with the number one overall pick, it's going be tough to pass on college basketball's top scorer. Freeman, the nation's top recruit coming out of high school, turned heads when he decided to attend Texas Southern and despite the Tigers 3-7 start to the season, it didn't affect Freeman's draft stock in the eyes of many NBA executives and the Tigers seem to have found their groove too.

He struggled a bit against Oregon, going 2-for-10 from long range and had quiet performances against Saint Mary's and Washington but against another Power 5 team in N.C. State, Freeman showed why colleges were drooling over his talent and why talent evaluators have him locked inside the top five.

Freeman scored 26 points in twenty five minutes before fouling out against the Wolfpack. A gifted scorer, Freeman is capable of scoring from anywhere on the court with a blend of Fox's athleticism and Kyrie Irving's creativity and shot making.

Defensively, Freeman is already a liability at the college level and this will only be further exploited as he faces tougher competition. Similar to Russell Westbrook, the physical tools are there for Freeman to be at worst a dependable defender but mental lapses, effort level and basketball IQ often find Freeman out of position as his defender heads to the basket on an open lane.

There also mental concerns on the offensive side as well as Freeman has a tendency to over dribble and stop the flow of the offense, especially in pressure situations. Ideally, he's not a lead guard but Freeman hasn't shown at either the high school or collegiate level an ability to play of the ball. Once the ball is out of his hands, he's no longer a threat as he often stops moving and doesn't cut, as if he’s tired, apathetic, or both.

Skill wise, Freeman might be the most talented player in the draft but based on fit, it's hard to see him going number one as several of the worst teams in the league already have a usage heavy guard. The most ideal of fits pairs him with a defensive minded, pass-first lead guard that allows Freeman to operate the offense sporadically while also not having to bare the brunt of the responsibility of coordinating an NBA offense. Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Milwaukee are all good fits but given his talent level, potential and where teams might select in the draft, New Orleans or Portland within the top five are more likely scenarios.
