Joseph 'JoJo' Freeman III was north of 300-pounds when he wrapped up his first season at Ranger College, a two-year university in Eastland County, Texas. Freeman had left the University of Houston basketball program under unclear circumstances, joining a high school teammate at Ranger College where Freeman was more likely to be found in his dorm, sleeping than in a basketball gym.

"There weren't a lot of attended practices," says a candid Freeman, now the star center for Texas Southern as they get ready to make a push for the NCAA Tournament after losing just one conference game this past season.

Freeman is averaging seventeen points and eight rebounds per game alongside his brother, Jeremiah, who might be the first pick of this summer's NBA draft. While his little brother's future is clear as a top five pick, big brother's future is as clouded as his past.

After spending just one season with the Cougars, Freeman transferred to Ranger College where he played just five games for the Rangers that season. The ensuing summer, Freeman left Ranger and briefly attended Prairie View A&M as a preferred walk-on before a disagreement with the coaching staff saw him return to Ranger College for his junior season.

His second season at Ranger College was uber productive as Freeman dropped the pounds and added inches, reaching seven-feet by the conclusion of the season. An always gifted athlete, Freeman was one of the highest rated JUCO prospects in the country and fielded offers from many SEC programs, including LSU and Arkansas before choosing to attend Texas Southern with his brother.

"It was probably more of a risk for JoJo than it was for Jeremiah," said one NBA talent evaluator regarding the brother's decision to attend an HBCU rather than a Power 5 program, "Jeremiah is a special talent, special kid, he's always going to excel. [JoJo] needs a lot of attention, a lot more management so I've been surprised with his success."

Some mock drafts have Freeman going as high as in the top ten while others view him as a bottom of the first round type of selection. The talent is there as he's the prototypical modern defensive big with a reported 7'9" wingspan that can run, jump and dunk. His offensive game is extremely limited to say the least and non-existent to be more accurate but at the college level -- especially in the SWAC -- he's able to get by with his athleticism.

There are also character concerns regarding reported failed drug tests at both Houston and Ranger College and an alleged altercation at Prairie View A&M where Freeman reportedly struck a coach. Freeman is also twenty-two years old and likely nearing his athletic prime while many of the other prospective bigs -- Chet Holmgren, Jalen Duren, Mark Williams -- are all teenagers with plenty of room to grow while who Freeman is today as a player is likely who he'll be three years from now.

Nevertheless, seven footers with his athleticism and strength don't grow on trees. Will it entice a team enough to take a chance on him?

Down but not out, Texas Southern heads to the NIT

Jeremiah Freeman looked around, trying to make eye contact with the nearest referee as Alabama A&M players frantically went for the rebound and started bringing the ball up the court.

Freeman had gotten past his defender and appeared to have a wide open lane to tie the game before Jevon Tatum blocked his shot, or fouled him, depending who you asked.

"I think I got fouled," said Freeman after the game, "But what I think doesn't matter."

What does matter for Texas Southern is that their March Madness dreams are over as Alabama A&M was able to secure the automatic bid and the Tigers weren't one of the at-large teams selected.

"We knew the stakes heading into the game," said Texas Southern head coach Johnny Jones of being passed over, "We had a chance to take care of business ourselves and we didn't."

Instead of playing Gonzaga in The RBC Center on March 21st, the Tigers will tip off against the Missouri Tigers on March 18th in the first round of the NIT. After some initial reports and concerns internally that the Freeman brothers would be opting out of the tournament, both have confirmed that they will suit up for Texas Southern at least once more.
