We got some interesting pieces this year. I’d imagine McDermott is a top trade candidate

Previewing The San Antonio Spurs '22-23 Season: Keldon Johnson's Next Step; Intriguing Rookie Class

As it stands, the Spurs don't project to be a very good team. This season is about development and possibly adding another lottery pick in 2023.

Key Changes

Key Losses: Dejounte Murray (traded to Atlanta), Lonnie Walker (free agency), Jock Landale (traded to Atlanta)

Key Additions: Jeremy Sochan (drafted No. 9 overall), Malaki Branham (drafted No. 20 overall), Blake Wesley (drafted No. 25 overall), Isaiah Roby (claimed off waivers), Gorgui Dieng (free agency)

The Next Wave

After letting DeMar DeRozan walk and trading Dejounte Murray in consecutive summers, the Spurs are officially, finally, committing to a youth movement. It's time to see what the Spurs really have in Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, who are the two non-rookies the Spurs are anticipating to lead the next wave.

Johnson is proven as a secondary option; a catch-and-shoot/slashing ace who can flow into pick-and-roll. But this season, he'll be expected to take on a significant usage spike. He's hoping to build on a campaign that saw him post over 17 points, six boards and two assists per game on 40-percent 3-point shooting, which will prove to the Spurs they have a true foundational piece moving forward.

For Vassell, is he more than a 3-and-D guy? He wants to be, but 80 percent of his buckets last season were assisted. He should get more opportunities this season to create. We saw a similar devlopment leap in Atlanta's DeAndre Hunter and Phoenix's Mikal Bridges, and Vassell looks like he can be next on that list.

The Rooks

Everyone is excited about Jeremy Sochan, San Antonio's highest 2022 first-round pick (No. 9 overall), but don't sleep on Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, the latter of which had a standout Summer League season, and could be competing for significant time at point guard at some point.

Sochan looks a lot like Obi Toppin looked coming out of college: 6-9 and extremely athletic as a floor runner and finishing around the rim.

Branham, on the other hand, isn't very explosive. The former St. Vincent-St. Mary and Ohio State product can, however, create his own jumper with decent handle for a pull-up, or catch off movement and fire away. He could be anywhere in the comps from Caris LeVert to Khris Middleton, depending on his commitment to defense and development.

With a great 6-foot-5 frame, Wesley is an excellent ball handler and has a natural feel for the game. He's a project with a high ceiling. He needs to work on his jumpshot and consistency finishing at the rim. If he improves as a shooter, he can become similar to Bones Hyland, or even Tyler Herro as a heatwave scorer and playmaker.

That third quarter really stunk it up for you! I like the team choice and I'm guessing you're running back another NBA chise. Definitely following along.
