Lakers Looking to Part Ways with Reaves?

Austin Reaves was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers on August 3, 2021. This was after Reaves declined to be selected 42nd overall by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Draft just six weeks prior.

After a successful rookie season, which saw him score a game winning shot over the Dallas Mavericks, it looked like Reaves made the right decision to sign in L.A. But then the 2022 NBA Draft happened and the Lakers selected David Grace out of the University of Houston in the second round. Grace, who is a prolific scorer in his own right, was initially seen to add more depth to what Los Angeles had with LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Reaves. Little did anyone know that he would take off the way that he did. Grace was named 2023 Rookie of the Year and 2023 Western Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVP. Los Angeles decided to try their luck with drafting another player out of Houston and took Grace’s former teammate, Marcus Sasser with the 30th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. And while Sasser has not taken off as quickly as Grace, his steady improvement has seen him slowly becoming an integral part of the Lakers’ game plans.

Sasser received his first starting nod against the Bulls at the end of January and it’s a spot he’s hoping to keep. The rookie is averaging 5.1 points per game seeing an average of 9.5 minutes per night. Reaves is averaging the same amount of points, but in twice as much time on the floor.

As Reaves’ role seems to be minimized as the season goes on, sources have stated that he is not looking to return to Los Angeles next season.

“He knows that he can contribute to and be an important part of several teams in this league,” a source close to the situation stated. “He just feels like he’s being shelved in Los Angeles in a crowded position.”

Players and coaches have remained quiet on the subject of a potential trade, but there have been whispers. As the 2024 NBA Draft looms ahead, the fact is not lost on the Lakers that they will be losing LeBron James after this season. So, now may be a good time to begin to work on a contingency plan for next season.

While Reaves may be a serviceable player for many teams in the league, the Lakers have to make sure they are getting the most bang for their buck.

Here are some potential deals the Lakers front office may consider entertaining in exchange for Reaves:

Los Angeles Clippers: Nah’Shon Hyland (PG, 80 OVR) This deal would allow rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino (11.4ppg, 3.5apg) the opportunity to take over starting duties full-time. Both point guards have very similar stats and rating, but the Clippers will more than likely keep the younger guard. Austin could possibly start at the shooting guard spot, allowing Paul George to play small forward, and Kawhi Leonard would move to power forward in place of Marcus Morris.

The Lakers would upgrade their point guard position and retain a 3-point shooter. Hyland is currently averaging 12 points and 3.7 assists per game. This would be Hyland’s third team in just as many seasons.

Utah Jazz: Walker Kessler (C, 83 OVR) Kessler is currently averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Jazz. This move would align a little better with how the Lakers want to look for next season, if Kessler chooses to return to Los Angeles, allowing Grace or Anthony Davis to move into the vacated power forward position.

Orlando Magic: Bol Bol (PF/C, 81 OVR) While Bol’s numbers are a bit on the low side in Orlando (6.3ppg, 4.3rpg), like Kessler, he would have the opportunity to develop at the center position and possibly be moved to a starting spot next season after playing behind James and Davis for the rest of this season.

This move would leave Reaves in a similar position that he’s in with Los Angeles as Jalen Suggs (81 OVR) is currently holding down the starting spot in Orlando.

If all else fails, Los Angeles may want to try and snag one of Oklahoma City’s five first round picks or one San Antonio’s three first round picks for this year’s NBA Draft.
The trade deadline is February 15. All eyes will be on Los Angeles for the next two weeks.
