Dawkins traded to Heat
By Jon Hammond

Image

The Raptors made their first trade today, sending guard Johnny Dawkins to Miami in exchange for a lottery protected first round pick in the 1996 draft. Dawkins told management that he was not interested in playing for Toronto and that he would not report to training with the team. Toronto added their second round pick in the upcoming draft to the deal.

McDaniel on the move
By Jon Hammond

Image

Xavier McDaniel was one of just a handful of veterans selected in the expansion draft and many thought the former all star would not be interested in playing for Toronto. He in fact was not and is now on his way back to Seattle in exchange for the Sonics first round pick in the 1999 draft.

Toronto added their second rounder in 1998 to the trade.

Raptors choose UNC's Stackhouse with fifth pick
By Jon Hammond

Image

After seeing the Pacers take Antonio McDyess first overall the Raptors reportedly tried to move up to the second pick before the Knicks swooped in and made a trade with the Nets. New York dealt Grant Hill and Mookie Blaylock to New Jersey in exchange for the Nets first round picks this year and in 1997 as well.

The Knicks used their newly acquired pick to take high schooler Kevin Garnett.

After that surprising trade and selection it was the Kings who took forward Joe Smith off the board.

Vancouver, who won the coin toss with Toronto, used the fourth pick on North Carolina forward Rasheed Wallace.

With the fifth pick Toronto went back to UNC and took Stackhouse.

In two seasons at UNC Stackhouse averaged 15.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Last season's numbers were 19.2/8.2/2.7. Stackhouse shot .517 along with .411 from three-point range and .712 at the free throw line last season.

Stackhouse is listed as a SG/SF and measured 6'6" and 218 pounds.

Toronto traded away their second round pick in this draft so unless they trade back in they are done for the night.

The only thing I hesitated about with Stack was the depth at that position in 96. We'll see how it plays out.

Raptors elect not to exercise options on Robinson, Whitney
By Jon Hammond

Following the draft the Raptors had a few team options to elect whether to exercise or not. They have not exercised their options on James Robinson and Chris Whitney, allowing them both to become unrestricted free agents who can sign with the team of their choosing during the upcoming free agency period. With those two leaving the Raptors now have ten players under contract.
