Lakers march a serious comeback against Toronto to avoid back-to-back losses
Team is very pleased with role players stepping up to lead
Recap of Raptors/Lakers game played on January 9, 2024

1st Quarter
For some reason for the Lakers this season, they have had somewhat of a difficult time in the first quarter of games. They seem to be a step slow and it's something that they seem to be aware of, but just not exactly how to change it and tonight's game against the Toronto Raptors was another example. The Raptors got on the board first, thanks to Pascal Siakam, but it was Thaddeus Young, who was in the starting lineup because Jakob Poeltl, the Raptors' starting center is dealing with a sprained left ankle. Thaddeus Young scored ten points in the quarter himself, but his aggressive offensive approach helped the Raptors at one point in the quarter lead by fourteen, 20-6. The Lakers were just not hitting shots. The Raptors led by seventeen following a layup by Denis Schroder, 26-9, but the Lakers scored the final five points of the quarter to trail 26-14.

2nd Quarter
The Raptors maintained their double-digit lead for a few minutes to start the second quarter. Christian Wood along with D'Angelo Russell started knocking down some jumpshots and also attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. Austin Reaves joined in the fun during the second quarter as the Lakers, were down 30-18 early on, tied the game and took the lead on two free throws from Taurean Prince. The Lakers extended their lead going into halftime, to seven points, 53-46.

3rd Quarter
The Raptors scored the first four points of the quarter, bringing the Lakers lead to just three points, 53-50. LeBron James, who had been held scoreless in the first half got on the board quickly, hitting a jumpshot and then scoring on a layup to put the Lakers lead back to seven, 57-50. The Raptors then went on a quick 10-2 run and recaptured the lead, 60-59 when R.J. Barrett knocked down a three-pointer. Tied 64-64, Christian Wood who has been playing very well as of late, gave the Lakers the lead 67-64, hitting a three-point shot. Wood would hit another three-pointer towards the end of the third quarter, giving the Lakers a nine-point lead, 79-70. Despite the Raptors taking the lead back briefly in the quarter, the Lakers ended up back up by seven-points heading into the fourth quarter, 81-74.

4th Quarter
Early on in the fourth quarter, former Lakers guard, Dennis Schroder knocked down a jumpshot to tie the game up 84-84. From that moment on, D'Angelo Russell was fouled and sent to the free throw line where he knocked down both and the Lakers retook the lead 86-84 and they would not allow the Raptors to get any closer. The Lakers outscored Toronto 27-10 for the rest of the quarter and won by the final score of 111-94.

Lakers can't come through in the clutch, drop second straight game
Third loss in their last four games as LeBron sits out against Jazz
Recap of Lakers/Jazz game played on January 13, 2024

1st Quarter
It was a struggle for both teams in the opening quarter. D'Angelo Russell returned to the starting lineup as LeBron James sat out tonight's game. Russell was quick to respond, scoring the Lakers first eight points of the game, but despite that the Lakers found themselves down 12-8 midway through the quarter. Austin Reaves made an impact when he entered the game, hitting back-to-back jumpers that tied the game 12-12. Christian Wood knocked down a three-pointer, giving the Lakers the lead 16-14 and they would end the quarter with a 17-16 lead.

2nd Quarter
The combination of Walter Kessler and Lauri Markkanen was giving the Lakers defense problems. Markkanen was hitting from the perimeter and Kessler was establishing himself in the post. Kris Dunn knocked down a couple of three-pointers during the Jazz 11-2 run that put them up by ten, 42-32. Anthony Davis who had been held scoreless so far in the game, finally got on the board, but the Jazz pushed their lead to eleven thanks to a Collin Sexton dunk, 47-36. The Lakers scored the final six points of the quarter, cutting the Jazz lead in half, 46-41 at halftime.

3rd Quarter
The Jazz withstood the Lakers mini run as the second half began. Anthony Davis brought the Lakers to within three, 48-45, but the Jazz responded with a 13-4 run that increased their lead to twelve, 61-49. Trailing by eight now, Austin Reaves knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, cutting the Jazz lead to a single basket, 64-62. Jordan Clarkson gave the Jazz a 73-64 lead as the quarter was winding down, but the Lakers got a three-pointer from Christan Wood and then Russell was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws, putting the Lakers down by just three, 73-70. Lauri Markkanen ended the quarter hitting two free throws, pushing the Jazz lead up to five, 75-70.

4th Quarter
The way this game started and both teams having trouble scoring, the fourth quarter was the solution. Both teams begin heating up to the point that they were going back and forth knocking down three-point shots. Russell hit two straight three-pointers as the quarter started, bringing the Lakers to within two, 77-76. Keyonte George hit two straight three-pointers of his own almost immediately and pushed the Jazz lead back up to five, 83-78. Later in the quarter, down by six, Russell hit another three-pointer to bring the Lakers to within three points, 91-88, but Keyonte George came down on the Jazz next possession and hit his own three-pointer. With the Jazz up by two, Lauri Markkanen knocked down a three-pointer, extending the Jazz lead to five, but Austin Reaves answered on the other end with a three-pointer of his own and the Lakers tied the game up 97-97 after a slam dunk by Anthony Davis. Newly added Laker Skylar Mays, getting some crunch time minutes gave the Lakers a one-point lead on a three-point play, 100-99. Christian Wood hit two free throws, giving the Lakers a 112-109 lead with 1.2 seconds left and the Jazz out of timeouts. The Jazz inbounded the ball to Collin Sexton who wound up and heaved about a 75 foot shot into the air as the buzzer sounded. The ball was still in the air as the buzzer sounded for at least two seconds before falling into the basket sending the game into overtime.

Overtime
In overtime, Anthony Davis did everything he could to put the Lakers in a position to win the game, but with a one-point lead and under ten seconds to play the Lakers had a defensive breakdown and Simone Fontecchio got open and hit a three-pointer from straight away and the Jazz took the lead 124-122. The Lakers had one last chance with Anthony Davis having the ball at the elbow. Davis turned and shot a fade away jumper that was just short as the buzzer sounded.
