The Los Angeles Lakers survived the first-round matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder and were now matched up with the Dallas Mavericks as the second round got underway. The Dallas Mavericks controlled the game for the most part, but in the fourth quarter both LeBron James and Anthony Davis took over. Davis started from the opening tip as he finished the first quarter scoring 21 of the Lakers 30 points. Davis finished the game with 29 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks, hitting 12-of-19 shots from the field. LeBron James was on a whole other playing level. James had a game-high 42 points (17-of-24 from the field, 8-of-8 from the free throw line), six rebounds, 12 assists and two blocks. D'Angelo Russell added 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Luka Doncic had a team-high 31 points along with four rebounds, 12 assists and two steals while Kyrie Irving finished with 29 points (12-of-32 from the field, 4-of-16 from the three-point line), three rebounds and six assists. The Lakers trailed the Mavericks 84-76 at the end of the third quarter and outscored them 39-23 in the fourth quarter.

In what was a highly charged back and forth first half of game two against the Lakers and Mavericks turned into a rout once the second half started. The Mavericks scored the first ten points of the game and the Lakers responded by storming back and taking the lead. The first half ended with the Mavericks holding a 57-54 lead. The Mavericks scored the first nine point of the second half increasing their lead to twelve, 66-54 and never looked back taking game two and tying the series up 1-1 with a 119-102 victory. Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 30 points, hitting 4-of-5 from the three-point line along with three rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Luka Doncic finished with 29 points, six rebounds, 15 assists, two steals and two blocks and the Mavericks got a big boost from starting center Daniel Gafford who added 19 points (9-of-12 shooting), 11 rebounds and three blocks. LeBron James led the Lakers with 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Anthony Davis finished with 27 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, three steals and five blocks while hitting 11-of-16 shots from the field, but had one of his worst free throw shooting nights, 4-of-10 from the line. Over the first two games of this series the two biggest factors are free throw attempts and three-point field goal attempts. In the first two games, the Mavericks have shot a total of 30 free throws compared to the Lakers who have 57 free throw attempts. The Mavericks have attempted 73 three-pointers compared to the Lakers 39 attempts.
