Lakers winning ways continue behind LeBron's triple double against Memphis
Winning streak now stands at six straight for Lakers who take over atop the West
Recap of Grizzlies/Lakers game played on January 5, 2024
1st Quarter
The Grizzlies and Lakers squared off for the second time this season. Ja Morant who was suspended for the first twenty-five games of the season has played in nine of the past ten games for the Grizzlies and didn't take long to get back into the swing of things. In his first game back Morant scored 45 points and then three games later Morant scored a career-high 62 points. On Friday night in the first quarter Morant's slam dunk early in the first quarter helped the Grizzlies take an early 7-2 lead. The Grizzlies held the lead for the first part of the quarter, but Austin Reaves gave the Lakers their first lead since the opening minutes of the game on a slam dunk, 20-19. The Lakers extended their lead by the end of the quarter to four, 31-27.
2nd Quarter
Both teams battled in the second quarter as they saw four lead changes and Ja Morant's three-pointer late in the second quarter had given the Grizzlies their biggest lead of the game, seven points, 52-45. Following a Ja Morant jumper just before the first half ended, the Grizzlies pushed their lead to eight, 56-48. After Anthony Davis hit two free throws, the Grizzlies took a 56-50 lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter
The Grizzlies got off to a hot start in the third quarter, hitting shots on their first two possessions and extending their lead to double-digits, 61-50. Jaren Jackson Jr. knocked down a three-pointer and followed that up with a thunderous slam dunk that put the Grizzlies up by seventeen, 77-60. The Lakers continued to fight back and kept trimming away at the Grizzlies lead cutting it down to four, 85-81 after Austin Reaves knocked down three free throws. The Grizzlies pushed their lead back up to seven before the end of the third quarter, 92-85.
4th Quarter
The Grizzlies took a ten-point lead, 97-87 early in the fourth quarter. LeBron James scored the next six points, cutting the deficit down to four, 97-93. Back-to-back dunks by James and Davis brought the Lakers to within one point, 104-103 of the Grizzlies. LeBron James would hit a three-pointer that tied the game up 106-106 before the Grizzlies answered back with a three-pointer of their own by Luke Kennard. Now down 112-108, LeBron James scored on a layup and followed that by hitting another three-pointer and giving the Lakers the lead 113-112. The Lakers ended the game on a 14-0 run capped off by another three-pointer by LeBron James and held on for a come from behind victory, 122-112.
