Miami holds out against Notre Dame's last minute run

(20-13) 86 @ #1 90 (30-1)

Miami #12 Tavon Cash slams it down on Notre Dame #5 Matt Farrell.

Matt Farrell -PG- Tavon Cash
Steve Vasturia -SG- Davon Reed
V. J. Beachem -SF- Rashad Muhammad
Bonzie Colson -PF- Dewan Huell
John Mooney -C- Kamari Murphy

Barclays Center. Brooklyn, NY. - This may not be football, but this matchup was not a game to miss for college basketball fans. With Notre Dame winning on a Justin Yoon field goal in football and Miami winning in a blowout win in their meeting during the regular season, this game would be the one to break the tie. And it did not disappoint one bit.

Although Miami kept the lead for the majority of the game, Notre Dame always seem to keep the deficit small. Much of the credit goes to senior forward V.J. Beachem who scored game-high 28 points as he repeatedly found holes in the Canes' 1-3-1 and 2-3 defenses. The Fighting Irish managed to take the lead briefly in the second half but were unable to gain any further momentum.

While the game score looks close, it was only due to the Fighting Irish's last minute run. Beforehand, Miami maintained a steady ten point lead. The lead went down to four points after several Notre Dame conversions and missed free throws from Cash and Huell.

Carrying their hot hand from the Duke game, the Miami big men continued going off against the opposing frontcourt. Dewan Huell and Kamari Murphy led the Hurricanes in scoring with 23 and 18 points, respectively. Backup center Rodney Miller took advantage of his additional playing time after Huell got into foul trouble early in the first half, finishing the game with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and a block.

Besides the big men, Miami's other highlight is none other than Tavon Cash. Since the big men have stepped up their offensive production, Cash did not have to be too aggressive with scoring and instead focus more on setting up his teammates. The freshman guard finished the game with 17 points and 13 assists.

Advancing to the third round, Miami will be playing the winner of the Louisville and Virginia Tech.

Watch out for Virginia Tech. They had to pull some upsets to get this far, they are not a team to sleep on.

Maybe you'll get a rematch with Pitt in the title game? :hmm:

Canes avoid upset after Hokies give them a run for their money in OT thriller

(15-17) 100 @ #1 102 (31-1)

Image
Up by three with a minute left in OT, Miami #1 Rashad Muhammad shoots the three that seals the game.

Starting Lineups:
Virginia Tech | Miami
Justin Robinson -PG- Tavon Cash
Seth Allen -SG- Davon Reed
Justin Bibbs -SF- Rashad Muhammad
Zach LeDay -PF- Dewan Huell
Kerry Blackshear Jr. -C- Kamari Murphy
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barclays Center. Brooklyn, NY. - After giving Miami a scare in their first meeting in the regular season, Virginia Tech has came close to upsetting Miami again in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.

After upsetting Duke and Louisville who were both ranked in the Top 25, a red hot Virginia Tech squad need to get past the number one ranked in the country Miami to get to the championship game. Throughout all of regulation, the two teams went back and forth. The Hokies were somehow making the most unusual shots and using their Jedi powers once again to force Canes turnovers. On one play, 6'1" Justin Robinson was BACKING DOWN 6'10" Dewan Huell in the post and shot a post hook over Huell and 7'0" Rodney Miller. Either Huell needs to go pump some iron or these Hokies kids need to be checked for PEDs.

As Miami led by three points with 9 seconds left, Virginia Tech guard Justin Robinson shot a three over Davon Reed to force the game into overtime. Similar to what happened in regulation, the two teams kept scoring back and forth. It was not until Cash dished a no-look reverse pass to an open Rashad Muhammad in the corner for a three to put the Miami lead up to 5. Virginia Tech ran down court and got Justin Robinson another three to cut the lead to 2, but it was too little too late for them.

Barely scathing by the now 15-17 Hokies, the Hurricanes will either play #3 Pittsburgh, who is the only team that beat Miami this season, or #12 Virginia.

Virginia Tech | 42 | 47 | 11 || 100
Miami |41 | 48 | 13 || 102

Virginia Tech Hokies
Justin Robinson: 29 pts, 2 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 9/14 FG, 4/6 3PT, 7/7 FT

Justin Bibbs: 20 pts, 8 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 8/20 FG, 4/4 FT
Zach LeDay: 15 pts, 11 reb, 5/10 FG, 5/6 FT
Kerry Blackshear Jr.: 6 pts, 10 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 3/9 FG, 0/1 3PT

Miami Hurricanes
Dewan Huell: 39 pts, 4 reb, 3 stl, 17/20 FG, 5/8 FT
Tavon Cash: 17 pts, 4 reb, 16 ast, 2 stl, 6/14 FG, 3/4 3PT, 2/2 FT
Kamari Murphy: 13 pts, 12 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl, 4/8 FG, 5/5 FT
Davon Reed: 13 pts, 3 reb, 5/14 FG, 3/6 3PT
