Carrier Dome. Syracuse, NY. - "His jumpshot is broken." That is what everyone was saying when they thought about Tavon Cash's shooting abilities last year. Cash has been shooting significantly better from beyond the arc compared to high school, but his shooting performance tonight was beyond anyone's expectations as he made a season high 7 threes out of 10 attempts. Anyhow, that was not the biggest highlight for the 2017 NBA Draft's projected number one overall pick tonight. The main headline for tonight's game was that Tavon Cash scored a season-high 51 points in only 28 minutes. After scoring 25 points in the first half, Cash was ready to continue his domination; however, his coach Jim Larrañaga had other plans. Larrañaga subbed Cash out for most of the second half which caused Syracuse to take the lead for a couple of minutes, which is thanks to his outstanding rotations. Luckily, Cash finally got back on the court around the ten minute mark and continued his terror on the Orange defense. With eight seconds left, Cash pulled up for a mid range shot to get over 50 points; but the Syracuse crowd was not ecstatic about his "unsportsmanlike" action. Well, Syracuse fans, you guys do not deserve to be salty because the NCAA committee still ranks Kansas higher than Miami in the Top 25. KANSAS LOST TO MURRAY STATE. Why are they still ranked number one in the nation? The Canes have to make a statement for the number one rank before the season ends.
Not only did Cash take over with his scoring, but he also managed to get a double-double with a game-high 10 assists. Huell may not have as big of a game compared to his recent performances but he managed to grab a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Syracuse guard John Gillon was dumbfounded on defense, unable to find any way to stop the hot hand of the Miami's star freshman. During a timeout, Gillon tried to run back to Colorado State but was stopped by his teammate Taurean Thompson who finished tonight with a game-high 5 blocks. Unlike other teams that Miami have played this season, Syracuse had actual rim protection. If the Oranges cannot stop Cash from scoring in the perimeter, they were able to stop him from getting easy buckets at the rim. Combining for seven blocks in tonight's game, Thompson and starting center DaJuan Coleman get much of the credit for preventing Cash from scoring more than 51 points. Despite this, they allowed Cash to shoot 16 free throws. Sorry, Syracuse. Next time have a bald person as your mascot instead of an orange.
