Make It Rain – The Tavon Cash Story
Chapter 20
Tonight was finally the moment Tavon Cash has been waiting for. Draft night. The last step before making it into the NBA. After dying twice and a whole lot of other preposterous ventures, he was finally here.
Since Tavon was a top prospect in this draft, he was invited to the green room to attend the draft in person. The NBA invited 19 other top prospects like Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, Jayson Tatum, and D'Aaron Fox. However, there was one thing that stood out for Tavon from the other prospects. He was the only one whose family was not sitting with him. At his table was just himself and Haziel. This sight may appear weird to the public's eye, but it was the right move in Tavon's mind. He has not seen his parents, or rather this world's version of his parents, since he left for Indiana that summer. Since then, he has not even been in contact with them. No phone calls. No visiting "home". Nothing. His parents were nothing more than just strangers to him.
"You are getting quite the looks from people, Tavon," Haziel comments on the area after taking a sip of his glass of water.
"Whatever. I just want this shit to start already."
Tavon slouches in his chair and stares up at the studio lights on the ceiling. The anticipation was getting on his nerves.
"Sit up properly. That type of posture is not condoned with all these cameras centered on you."
"Fine." Tavon sighed and straighten himself up on the chair.
On Tavon's right was Markelle Fultz's table, a fitting seating assignment to place the projected number 1 and 2 next to each other. Tavon took out a pen from his suit's breast pocket and started aiming it like a dart in Fultz's direction. The previous night before going to sleep, Tavon was watching dart videos on YouTube thanks to the website's algorithm. One of the videos he watched was of Paul Lim's nine-darter from 1990. Mesmerized by the precision and consistency from Lim's performance, Tavon wanted to give darts a try. Unfortunately, he was stuck attending a draft where he was more than likely going to be picked first overall. He did manage to find a compromise. Instead of a dart board, he thought of the next best thing to practice his dart skills on: Markelle Fultz's hair. Granted, Jonathan Isaac may be a grander target in terms of hair; but Fultz's basketball potential gives his hair more value. Fultz's fade was too clean not to appreciate, which is exactly why Tavon has chosen it as a replacement for a dart board.
Oblivious to his surroundings, the cameras were recording his shenanigans. This moment is definitely going to go viral on social media. Tavon takes his final adjustments in his aim and throws the pen at Fultz. The pen flew straightforward at full speed into Fultz's luscious afro fade. Bulls-eye. If Tavon shot free throws like darts, he would still have a better free throw percentage than Ball and Fultz combined.
"Huh?" Fultz pulls the pen out of his hair as he surveys the area in confusion.
"Remember to not fuck up your shoulder, Kelle!"
Fultz turns over to Tavon, who was waving like a moron. Before Fultz was able to scold Tavon, Adam Silver approached the podium to officially start the draft. Silver said his usual speech used for every other draft and congratulated the Warriors for winning the NBA title, which the crowd booed. To end his speech, he officially announced the Celtics-Sixers trade that gave the Sixers the first pick. Silver left the stage and the five-minute clock started for the Sixers to make their selection.
"Welcome to Philadelphia," Haziel nonchalantly tells Tavon, patting him on the back.
"Nah, you can't be that sure. For all what we know, they pick Fultz or someone else instead."
"They were enamored with you during those workouts. There is zero chance that they pick anybody not named Tavon Cash. In the scouts' eyes, you're a once in a generation type talent. Anyone who passes on you is an imbecile."
Haziel was right. It would be a mistake if the Sixers took someone else with the first pick. One of the Sixers' biggest needs going into the offseason is a point guard (no offense to T.J. McConnell), which they can easily fill in the year. Tavon can compliment the rising star Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, who should be able to make his NBA debut next season. With a young core like that, the Sixers can be a threat in the East for the next couple of years.
"Aight, bro. You right."
Tavon nods his head in agreement and looks at the podium, awaiting for the pick to be announced.
After a couple minutes, Silver returned to the podium with the draft selection card in hand.
"With the first pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Tavon Cash from the University of Miami."
"LET'S FUCKING GO!" Tavon pop-offs from his chair in excitement and daps up Haziel. "WE MADE IT!"
Tavon runs over to Lonzo Ball's table and starts doing the big balls dance while the Ball family can only watch in disgust.
"SUCK IT! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
Again, ESPN is recording this live. Luckily he cannot get fined for such actions because he has not signed a contract yet.
After Tavon was done basking in the glory, he grabbed his draft hat and stepped up to the stage to shake Adam Silver's hand and take a picture for history. While they were shaking hands, Silver quietly asked Tavon if there was something wrong with him. Tavon lets go of Silver's hand and only replies with a shrug before walking down the stage for an interview with Allison.
He finally made it to the NBA. The real fun starts now.
