NBA|CROSSOVER
Baldwin Hasn't Lost A Step Heading Into All-Star Weekend

Image

By Amber Spencer February 11, 2027

It’s an old thing, but it always feels new. The 76th Annual NBA All-Star Weekend is less than a week away and a familiar face is returning. Seven years since his last appearance, Derek Baldwin has returned to the NBA’s biggest night. It was announced on yesterday that he would be a starter in this year’s All-Star game alongside his teammates Keith Perkins and Shareef O’Neal.

Just so you’re aware, this isn’t some type of sympathy vote for the 39 year old. He finished second in the Eastern Conference voting, but he has the numbers to prove it.

Averaging 18.4ppg game this season, Baldwin is the second leading scorer for the Brooklyn Nets behind Shareef O’Neal (18.6ppg). Building momentum off an incredible season last year where he averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

He was unable to be nominated for last year’s All-Star team because he wasn’t an active player when voting began on December 1st. There is no doubt in a lot of people’s minds that he would have been part of the team then.

“Things happen the way that they do for a reason,” said Baldwin. He still remains humbled by all he’s accomplished even at this stage in his career. “I mean, I’m surprised by my numbers. I’m almost 40 years of for crying out loud. I averaged a little over 18 points last season and I only played a little more than half the games on the schedule so, to still have these numbers crossing the halfway point is impressive, even to me.”

Baldwin continues to impress, as he closed out January with a triple-double (25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) against Washington before posting another against Phoenix (23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) just four days later.

No, these were not sympathy votes by any means.

“It looks like he hasn’t lost a step,” commented Nets head coach, Kobe Bryant. Bryant and Baldwin battled a few seasons before Bryant’s retirement 2015. “Less power, more finesse. We are watching the evolution of Derek Baldwin.”

The power isn’t that much less, Baldwin still throws out a few thundering dunks here and there.

“Only if I know the matchup is right. My body only gives me like three a game,” he jokes. “That’s my max. If I’ve had enough rest, I may be able to get five. But I don’t tear through the air like I used to.”

His game appears to be more all around, more complete. He’s averaging 40% from beyond the arc and shooting over 50% from the field this season. Those stats, and the Nets 48-3 record are what also have him on the short list for MVP.

“I try not to make too much of it, I just let the game come to me.”

After the All-Stars were announced, Twitter was ablaze with young players showing their enthusiasm for being allowed the opportunity to play alongside one of the greats. From the Magic’s Richard Dixon to Washington’s Michael Wong. Even Bronny James was excited, although he’ll be suiting up for the other side.

“My dad always said this was one of the greatest things he got to experience, playing during All-Star weekend. He got to go up against Kobe, played alongside Iverson and Shaq in his first All-Star game, so to be able to share the stage with Derek Baldwin, I’m looking forward it,” he said before jokingly adding, I’m trying to drop at least 25 or 30 on him.”

O’Neal and Perkins are probably most excited to play alongside Baldwin next weekend.

“This is about to be bananas!” Perkins exclaimed. “We just get to let loose with him for a bit. This is going to be a lot of fun.”

“I made sure I rested up for this,” said O’Neal, who is returning from a toe injury that he suffered in the game against Oklahoma City. “I don’t know how many more All-Star games we’re going to get.”

If Baldwin can keep up the pace, and barring any injuries, we think fans may be able to see one or two more appearances from him.
