The time has come for the NBA Finals. Derek Baldwin is suiting up across from his former teammate and one of his closest friends, Blake Griffin. Baldwin and Griffin played together as members of the Los Angeles Clippers from 2016-2020, winning championships for four straight years alongside teammate, and Hall of Famer, Chris Paul. At the start of this season, the Dallas Mavericks traded away their sixth round pick, Nate Matthews in exchange for shooter Rodney Hood and two weeks later, signed Blake Griffin to a multiyear contract. There have been lots of theories thrown around about the nature of that signing, but both teams disregard them as mere rumors. It appears that they have both achieved their goals this year, a chance to compete for the Larry O’Brien trophy.

“We can’t listen to what outsiders think,” said GM Carmelo Anthony. “If Dallas made it and we didn’t or vice versa, this wouldn’t even be up for debate. People just need something to talk about. We’re just focused on gold.”

It’s been a breeze for Brooklyn, who has swept all of their opponents to make their way to the NBA Finals. Brooklyn is definitely the more rested of the two teams, playing only 12 games, whereas Dallas has played 17 games.

Dallas isn’t focused on the road they took to get there, as they are focused on the fact that they are back. The Mavericks have finally returned to the NBA Finals after winning the franchises first, and only, championship some 15 years ago.

“Winning a championship is definitely top of mind for us,” said Blake Griffin. Griffin has finally returned to his first NBA Championship since 2020, the same as Derek Baldwin.

“I think it’s definitely bittersweet. It’s the last time either of us competed in the NBA Finals and this time we’re doing it on opposite sides. But it’s gonna be a great contest.”

Griffin has posted solid numbers in this year’s playoffs. The 37-year old veteran has been averaging 15 points and 5 rebounds per game over the playoffs. He sat out for the first three games of the Western Conference Finals because of a hyperextended knee. He came back stronger than ever in Game 4, after the Mavericks lost Game 3 behind a 29-point performance from Devin Booker.

Leading the Mavs in scoring is Steph Curry. Curry has averaged 18.2 points and 5 assists per game. He’s shot over 35% from beyond the arc.

Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Spencer Myers, has also been putting up solid numbers. He’s averaged 18 points per game throughout the playoffs. He will have his hands full guarding Derek Baldwin in the Finals.

“I’ve seen him in action,” said Myers. “I’ve also seen the film. He’s moved from dominating superstar to crafty veteran. You still gotta respect his game.”

Derek Baldwin’s game should definitely be respected. He’s been Brooklyn’s leading scorer this season, giving this Nets team a boost unlike anyway expected from the time he stepped on the court in December. Brooklyn has shown more of a balanced vibe in the playoffs, with Baldwin along with last year’s MVP Keith Perkins, this year’s MVP Shareef O’Neal, and Rookie of the Year Nate Matthews all averaging 17 points per game.

Can Baldwin push them to four more wins? He only two words for us in response to that question:

“Why not?”
