Road Trip

Image

“So, my dad and I watched the game.” Eva sighed as she sat on the couch. She handed me a bottle of water and picked up the remote from the table. Me and Eva have been kicking it pretty heavy this past month. It’s like old times. Better, if I’m being honest.

“Mhm.” I grunted in response.

“It was close, Antonio.”

“Mhm.”

“You played good though.”

“Squad still lost, Eva. To Orlando.”

“What are you always telling the reporters and shit? Long season, right?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.”
She was right, but I didn’t wanna admit that. I still hate losing. Even if it’s no money on the line.

“Look, you invited me to over to binge watch Ballers and I brought Wing Stop. I’ll take my food and go home.” She goes to stand up from the couch. I grab her around the waist.

“No. No. Don’t leave. Or at least don’t take the wings. I’ll be good.”

“You promise?”

“Yes. I promise.”
She picks up the remote, but I stop her before she can start the show. “I got a favor to ask.”

“What’s up?”

“So, I’m gonna be out of town for almost two weeks. We got a big road trip coming up. We leave for Phoenix on Friday and I’m not gonna be back until like that next Monday.”

“Okay,”
she said slowly. “You need me to house sit?”

“Sort of like that. I need you to watch Nico for me. Make sure he gets to school and shit.”

“Can’t Big Mo do that for you? He’s like y’all godfather or some shit, right?”

“He is, but he’s going to be out of town on business and you would really be doing me a solid. Name your price.”

She pulls out her phone and starts searching for something. A slow grin crosses her face. “Anything?”

“I feel like I’m going to regret it, but yes, anything.”

“Tickets to the Lakers game on Monday night.”

“You serious? How are you supposed to watch Nico if you’re in LA?”

“It’s almost Christmas break. He should be fine for a day or two. We’ll be back on Tuesday morning. Nico is a good kid. He deserves a break.”

I think long and hard about it. She’s right, my brother is a good kid. We’ve had a rough go of it. He could use a break. Maybe we can make it a mini vacation or something.

“Alright. Alright. Why don’t you both come out to Los Angeles on Saturday morning and watch the Clippers game too? Two for one. We can hit up The Grove, do some shopping. What do you think about that?”

“Nico, what do you think about that?”
She yells.

“Sounds good to me. Thanks, Eva.” He yells back from his room.

“Y’all played me?”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe.”

“Can I borrow the LV duffle, bro?”

"Hell no,"
I yelled back.

"So," Eva paused the television. "Is it too soon to ask to borrow that Gucci duffle?"

I didn't answer. I just grabbed the remote and started the show again. "Y'all need to get your own damn luggage." I grumbled.

"Thanks." She gave me a kiss on the cheek and snuggled into my side. "We should have ordered some pizza too."

NOTES & QUOTES

Heat Starting Five: Antonio Snow, Dwyane Wade, Josh Richardson, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Hassan Whiteside

Summary: Miami was looking to get back their loss in Los Angeles. The Lakers were looking to bounce back from a loss to Memphis three nights prior. Both teams are fighting to remain above .500 this season.

The Lakers got on a run early as the Heat seemed to look lost on defense. They managed to pull themselves together to get the game tied at 37 in the second quarter. LeBron James was heavy on the defense as he came away with back to back steals on Antonio Snow for 4 quick points to push Los Angeles’ lead.

Miami trailed 49-56 at halftime, but they would catch up quickly as Snow put his midrange game to work to stretch out the Lakers defense and make room for Hassan Whiteside and Bam Adebayo to maneuver. Both players scored 12 points each in the win.

Snow played well on both sides of the ball. He was a big catalyst for Miami’s defense. The Heat scored 18 points off of 11 Lakers’ turnovers. Snow led all in scoring with 31 points in a big win for Miami.

Key Stats for MIA: 44/80 (55%) - FG| 10/24 (42%) –3PT|17/19 – (89%) – FT| 18 – 2nd Chance Points|37 – Bench Points|57 – Rebounds| 28 - Assists
Key Stats for LAL: 43/79 (54%) - FG| 8/22 (36%) –3PT|2/3 - (66%) – FT| 7 – 2nd Chance Points|22 – Bench Points|30 – Rebounds| 29 – Assists

Antonio Snow on besting LeBron and the Lakers: Feels good. We weren’t going to take that loss in Miami lying down. I told LeBron as such. Seriously, the team played great tonight. We knew we had to get our defense tight above all else. Cut the head off the snake. Contain LeBron. We did that. Great team effort tonight.

LeBron James on back to back losses: We’re just struggling a little bit right now. Loss to Memphis, loss to Miami. We’ll get it back. Just need to regroup. Opposition showed a lot of heart tonight. They dug their heels in and got a win on us.

Dion Waiters is Out of Miami

With the much improved play by Antonio Snow, and the changes made to Heat roster, Dion Waiters has seen his minutes starting to dwindle. The grumblings have not gone unnoticed by others in the league and soon rumors surfaced that Waiters was looking to be moved and quickly.

Over the past few weeks Miami has put out feelers and they finally got a decent trade in return. The Golden State Warriors have agreed to move Andre Iguodala and a 2021 first round pick in exchange for Waiters.

This has been Miami’s sixth acquisition since the season started and it’s only December. It seems as though Pat Riley is more than willing to put all he has into supporting the development of rookie Snow and building a possible playoff team for veteran Dwyane Wade. Hopefully, it will be the last as these players will need time to gel.
