Just the Two of Us

“So, we’re good?” I asked. I was boarding the plane back to Miami after the narrow victory against Dallas. All-Star Weekend was around the corner, but Valentine’s Day was tomorrow and I wasn’t going to skip our first Valentine’s Day.

“Better than good. I mean, this is probably the biggest tip that I’ve ever received.”

“I appreciate you doing this for me, it’s worth it.”

“I’m actually kind of jealous. My baby daddy ain’t shit.”

I had arranged for Eva to have the night off. In order to do that, I had to get one of her coworkers to fill in. It’s amazing what five hundred dollars and a pair of court side seats will get you.

“You’ll find that special someone. I appreciate this though, Ashley.”

“I appreciate the extra coins and the tickets.”

After hanging up the phone, I sent a text to my brother.

The next afternoon, I pulled up in front of Eva’s house and released a deep breath. I know I’m making a big deal out of nothing, it’s just a dinner, but I feel like this can lead to something bigger. I give myself a pep talk and climb out of the car. I grab a bag from the trunk and then I head up the stairs. I gave a tentative knock on the door and I’m greeted by Eva’s dad, Donald.

“What’s going on, young A.I.?”

“How you doing, Mr. Walker?”

“I’m good. Assuming you’re here to pick up my little girl.” He gestured to the bags in my hands. Why did he have to call her his little girl? I felt my face heat up a little bit. He was an intimidating man. Former tight end for University of Central Florida. He cut an imposing figure.

“Uh, yeah. She hasn’t left for work yet, right?”

“Nah, come on in.”

He stepped to the side and granted me entry to the three bedroom house that Eva grew up in. I had only been by a handful of times when we were in school. But never to take her on a date or anything like that, so the energy is definitely different.

I took a seat on the couch. He took a seat in his chair to my right.

“You and Mrs. Walker have any big plans for tonight?”

“We do actually. Dinner and a movie. Reservations at Truluck’s. Courtesy of our baby girl and then we’re going to see Purple Rain.”

“Purple Rain?”

“Yep. That was our first date. Back in eighty-four. They’re doing a showing for the thirty-fifth Anniversary.”

“Wow. That’s dope.”

“So, what about you two?”

Before I could answer, I heard Eva coming down the hall.

“So, Daddy, the reservations for you and Mama are at 5:30, don’t worry about –” She stopped talking when she saw me sitting in the room.

“Sup, girl?”

“What are you doing here?”

“Don’t sound so excited.”

“No! I mean, I thought you would have just gone straight to Charlotte. And I have to work tonight. I told you I couldn’t get anybody to fill in for me.”

“Well, my flight to Charlotte leaves in the morning. So, if you don’t mind putting this on, I will be right here when you get back.” I handed her the bags.

“But work—”

“Is handled. Go. We’re going to be late.”

After she changed into the outfit that I bought her, a pair of flowy navy pants, a navy and white striped shirt, and a pair of Christian Louboutin sandals, we made our way toward our destination.

“You are full of surprises tonight, huh?”

I had booked a yacht for us to take a ride up the Miami River. Being a celebrity has its perks. I just had to do some advertising for the site and I was able to get 50% off the ride. But she didn’t need to know all that.

“I do what I can do, when I do it.”

After dinner, we sat on the deck at the back of the yacht enjoying some music and champagne as we watched the city of Miami pass us by.

“This was amazing, Antonio.”

“Well, I have one more thing to ask of you.”

“After all of this? Anything.”

“Come to Charlotte with me in the morning. Spend the weekend. Just the two of us.”

She opened her mouth to respond, but then closed it again. “What about Nico? I know he's not missing this."

"He's sixteen. He doesn't need us to babysit him."

"What about work?”

“What if I arranged for you to have the entire weekend off?”

“You did what?” She smiled.

“I had to be prepared in case you said yes.”

“Well, I guess I shouldn’t let all of your hard work go to waste, huh?”

All-Star weekend if off to a good start.
