“I’m glad you were able to make some time for me. I’m assuming things didn’t pan out with your boy.”

“No, things did not. I’m glad you were able to carve out some time for me, Champ.”

“Oh, I always have time to for a meal.”

Last week, I got a text from Mickey, the driver that I met for my birthday at Homestead Miami Speedway for my racing experience. She asked if I wanted to hang out and who am I to say no? So, here we are at a barbecue spot in Miami having lunch. We made the decision to eat outdoors, which wasn’t the best idea. Being fresh off a championship is sure to draw a lot of attention in Miami. The owner of the restaurant offered to move us inside, but I told him it was fine. I called a few of Big Mo’s guys over to act as security. I did a few autographs and then we had some relative peace and quiet.

“How did you find this spot? This brisket slaps!”

“A girl can’t reveal all of her secrets now, but I found out through a friend of a friend.”

“I’ll respect that.”

We ordered another round of drinks and chatted some more. She talked more about her growing up in California and being a die-hard Lakers fan.

“So, I should really feel honored that you were willing to hang out with me after what happened in the Finals.”

“I wasn’t going to say anything, but yeah.”

“You’ve been in Miami for five years now. What is it going to take to make you a Heat fan?”

Before she could answer I heard one of my security guys, Ryan, give a sharp whistle pulling my attention away from the conversation and look in his direction. He jerked his head toward the sidewalk and I saw Eva and her friend Ashley walking toward the restaurant.

You have got to be kidding me.

“Are you sure you want to eat here, Eva? It looks pretty busy.”

“It’ll be fine. It’s not like we have anywhere to be. I heard this is some of the best barbecue in Miami. I’m not starving or –” She stopped talking when she noticed me.

“Hey, Eva. Ashley.”

“I’m not really in the mood for barbecue anymore.”

“So, you’re going to leave because of him and his new flavor of the month?” She turned her attention back toward me and Mickey. “You are such a damn dog, Tony. You were all over my girl two months ago and this is how you’re acting? Wow. Just wow.”

“Ashley, let’s just go.”

“Looks like you dodged a big ass eighteen-year bullet, huh, girl? I--”

“Ashley!” Eva shouted as she pulled Ashley away from the building.

I choked on my drink.

“Dodged a what?” I strained to get out as I begin to follow them down the sidewalk. “Eva.”

She kept walking as if she didn’t hear me. But of course, Ashley turned to give me her full attention.

“Please go back to your lil’ lunch date, Tony.”

“Not until you tell me what you meant by that comment.”

“I said what I said. It’s over and done with. And my girl is better off not being tied to you for the rest of her life.”

“Eva!” I yelled again. She had made it back to her car and was climbing in. Still ignoring me.

“Just save it. The ship has sailed. I hope my girl cuts ties with your ass for real this time.”

She stormed off and climbed in the car. I stood frozen to my spot trying to process what Ashley just implied. I don’t know how long I had been standing there when I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Mickey.

“Not passing any judgement, but it seems like you have a lot of baggage, Tony.”

“I, uh, I didn’t think I did, but maybe I was wrong.”

“Well, look, I took care of the check, if you wanna get out of here.”

“Damn for real? How much was it?” I started going through my pockets for cash.

“It’s not a big deal. You can catch the next one.”

“So, there will be a next one?”

“Sure. You were fun up until those last 15 minutes. But I need to you to sort out whatever that is before we go out again.”

“Cool.”

Yeah, I'm gonna get this shit sorted out alright.
