Legendary Advice

I don’t know if I’m just running out of gas or what, but this tournament in Chicago is wearing me down. I had to pull out all of the stops just to take these first two games. But this is my time. I can’t let them see me sweat.

Patrick Beverly is a beast. It’s like everything he shot was going in. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it so far, it left me baffled. But I managed to lock him down and force the rest of his team to step up. My guys stepped up too. PG started knocking down threes and that was all she wrote.

I was sitting in the bleachers when I felt someone sit down next to me.

“You sure you got enough left I the tank for one more game? I heard this next squad is gonna be pretty tough to beat.”

I looked to my left and see Dwyane Wade.

“D. Wade. What’s up, man? I’m definitely ready. I’m just getting my wind back, but I’m good. I stay ready.”

“I like your attitude. You gotta stay upbeat and focused. Especially in the NBA. The season is a grind. One minute you could be on a ten game win streak and the next you lost four straight. But you gotta keep that swag and confidence about you.”

I nod in agreement as I take in what he’s saying.

“I hear you. Ballin’ out here, it’s either win or go home. So, you don’t really have time to focus on the next thing, you gotta stay in the present. Twenty-one points and it’s over, you know? Gotta keep the intensity up no matter what happens.”

“I think you’ll be alright. Just try not to dwell too much on the losses. That competitive fire of yours can spill over and turn into some serious anger if you’re not careful. You can’t get too down on yourself or your teammates for making mistakes. That’s how things start to pile up. It’s like—”

“Quicksand.” I finish his statement.

“You got it.”

He extends his fist to mine and I tap my fist against it. He gets up from the bench and goes to the court and starts stretching with Anthony Davis and his team. Of course, he’s playing tonight, I say to myself.
