“That’s ball game, folks! Congratulations to both teams on making it to the finals, but there could only be one winner. Salute to the new champions Full Court Press! This year’s player of the tournament is the coldest young baller from Miami, Florida, Antonioooo Snooooooow!”

I had just finished my third streetball tournament this summer. My team, Blacktop Boyz, had taken it all again. We were becoming the team to beat in Miami and were looking to spread our wings and get some on court action across Florida.

“Nice job, fellas! We cashed in tonight.” Greg told us. Greg was the unofficial captain of this team. His daddy had some deep pockets, so Greg took care of all of our gear and made sure we had the best shoes and custom jerseys. He wasn’t the best (or even third best) player, but he was decent enough.

“Even got a little bonus for the MVP.” He said looking at me. He started typing into his phone and then my phone sent an alert saying that I had received a payment for a thousand dollars.

Uncle JJ had of course blown through most of my dad’s insurance money over the last two years, buying a new car, gambling, drinking, and tricking off to these women, so I had to do what I had to do in order to make money for my brother and myself. Basketball was putting food on the table for us right now. I was 16-years old and already the man of the house. I was destined to get us out of the situation that we were in.

Basketball was the only sense of normalcy we had in our lives over the past two years. My dad taught my brother and I how to play and we would try to go to the park every other weekend to get some games in with him. It was our thing. So being able to still do that with my little brother was a big deal for me.

A year ago, after I finished a pick-up game at the park one afternoon, I met this guy, Dante, and he asked if I would mind playing a game with him and his friend since they were a man short. I still had some time, so I joined in. That’s where I met Greg. It turns out he and Dante played in streetball tournaments around the city and Dante was a recruiter of sorts for this guy named Maurice who ran the tournaments. It seemed shady as hell at first, but Maurice, or Big Mo, is a pretty good dude. He used to play back in the day, but injuries got him early in his career.

Most of the games were played late at night, which required me sneaking into the house around 1am, after Uncle JJ was either passed out drunk or had already left to go to the casino for the weekend, but the pay was good, and I was taking care of my brother.

Fortunately, my uncle didn’t realize just how much money I brought in playing in these tournaments over the weekend. He never paid much attention to what we were doing as long as we stayed out of his way and he was able to collect my dad’s Social Security. Maurice knew my uncle and sympathized with my situation, so helped me open a checking account to deposit my winnings without alerting my uncle to any of it.

I just needed to get through two more years of high school and then Nicolas and I could be done with all of this shit.
