Feeling Good, Feeling Great

I pull out a chair for my dinner companion before rounding the table and taking my seat at a table near the back of Drago’s Restaurant.

“That game against Houston was nice. It must have been because I was in the arena tonight.”

“You always trying to take credit for my wins, Bree. What about when we lost to Pepperdine in the tournament?”

“Why you gotta bring up old shit, Mo? We talking about today, man.” She shrugged.

We order our drinks and appetizers and fell into short silence once our drinks arrived.

“I didn’t think you were gonna make it out here for the holiday, Bree. I’m glad to see you.”

Brianna Sinclair has been my best friend since Freshman year at Loyola-Marymount. We had a few classes together that fall semester and we just clicked. She’s always been to as many of my games as she could make during my four years. She was there through my injury during junior year. And she covered all of my involvements with social justice going on around the country. She majored in Mass Comm so she insisted that I was helping her out. Currently, she’s doing an internship at the San Francisco Chronicle, so I guess it all worked out.

“So, what’s going on with you back on the West Coast? I didn’t think you’d get any time off to see your boy.”

“I mean, when I’m offered courtside seats to see Harden and Westbrook, I ain’t gonna turn it down.”

“Damn. It’s like that? I’m only good for courtside seats.”

“I was sitting next to Alvin Kamara! Good lookin’ out, my dude.”

The waiter brought out our food. He kind of lingered at the table for a minute and I knew what that meant.

“You got your phone on you, man?”

He just nodded and looked down. I gestured to Bree and handed her my phone to use.

“You mind?”

“Nah.” She grabbed the camera and took the picture. I promised the guy that I’d put it on Instagram tonight. A few more fans stopped by for autographs before management had to send them away so that Bree and I could finish our meal.

We decided to walk the 15 minutes to my condo on Decatur Street and take in a few of the sights of the city.

“It was almost like being in college again and people stopping you in the dining hall and shit.”

That seemed like a lifetime ago. We would constantly get stopped in the cafeteria or the library or wherever we were on campus so people could take a picture. Especially when it was tournament time. The campus would be buzzing. It never seemed to bother her though. She would just take the pic and hand the phone back.

“I guess it was, huh? So, how is it in San Fran? You made any new friends?”

“It’s cool. No friends as cool as you. But this guy from work did ask me out.”

I stopped short and almost tripped on the sidewalk. “A, uh, a date?”

“Yeah, his name is Micah.”

I scoffed. “Fuck kinda name is that?”

“Shut up.”

“I’m just saying.”

“He’s nice. A little nerdy for my taste, but I told him yeah. So, we have plans to go out when I get back this weekend. What about you?”

“Nah, I’m keeping my mind free of females. It’s all about ball for me.”

“Yeah, right.”

“I’m serious. I go to the games, I watch film, and I hit the gym. I’m just trying to stay focused this season. Maybe I check out the dating scene once the playoffs are over. These New Orleans women are kinda nice. But I’m on my grind right now. Trying to get my stats up. Maybe get an All-Star weekend appearance, flip some more endorsements. Get my bread up. So, no women right now.”

“If you say so, man. I still don’t believe your ass. You were dating that professor back at LMU.”

“She was a T.A. damn it! I need y’all to stop giving me grief about that.”

We shared a laugh. And it felt good. It was good to have somebody from my life before to visit me. It was good that Bree came to visit especially.

“So, what movie are we watching tonight?” She asked.

“You pick. Make it something funny though.”

She turned on the tv and started scrolling through movies on Netflix. This was something else we would do all the time in school. After a bad game or a good game or just whenever we both had some down time. We’d just veg out and stream something on Netflix. She would have a glass of wine and I would usually have a bottle of Body Armor. If I was being honest with myself, I would have to say that I missed this.

I went to the kitchen and started looking through my wine fridge.

“Red or white, Miss Howard?”

“You pick, Mr. Sauce.”
