The buzzer sounded at the end of a close overtime loss to the Lakers.

“No hard feelings, right?” LeBron said while were talking at halfcourt.

“I’ll see your ass in New Orleans in about 10 days, bro. Keep that energy.”

“Y’all flying out tonight?”

“Nah. We’re heading to Portland tomorrow morning. What’s up?”

“We’re going to dinner at Katsuya. I got somebody that I want you to meet.”

“Meet?”

“Yeah, she’s a huge fan.”

“She?”

“You a damn parrot?” He laughed as he walked away. “Hit me up in a few.”

About an hour later, I’m being taken to a private room in Katsuya where LeBron, Savannah, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union are seated.

“Ah, my guy! You made it.”

I introduced myself to everyone, although apparently it wasn’t necessary. Our other guests already knew who I was.

I noticed there was an empty seat next to mine and I gestured toward the chair.

“We’re waiting for one more?”

Dwyane and Gabrielle exchanged a look.

“Actually, we are not,” she said, “because here she is.” She stands up and pulls a young woman into a hug. “Hey, girl. This is LeBron and Savannah and I’m sure you know this gentleman.” She gestured to me.

"It's good to see you, Morgan."

When I got a look at her, she looked really familiar, and I was trying to place her. Then she smiled. I would never forget it.

“Cassie? Cassie Winters?” I said standing up.

“Hey, Morgan. Didn’t think you’d recognize me.”

“How could I forget a smile like that?”

“Well, damn, you gonna let the girl sit down or what?”

“My bad. Yeah, sure.” I quickly stepped to the side to pull out her chair.

Three hours of great food and great conversation, and some clutch tips from D. Wade, we were getting ready to leave. It turns out that Cassie was working on the set of a TV show that Gabrielle was working on and she was wearing a Loyola-Marymount sweatshirt to set one day. They struck up a conversation and here we are.

Cassie was a film major and we had taken a few English classes together. She did a real dope documentary on women’s basketball team for her senior project, so I had seen her around.

After telling everyone good night, I walked her to her car. Since I had taken an Uber to the restaurant, she offered to give me a ride back to my hotel.

“You went through some pretty great lengths to meet your boy, huh?”

“You are so full of yourself.” She laughed. “She just mentioned that you guys might do dinner after the game tonight. Gabby invited me.”

“Gabby? Oh, y’all are cool like that?”

She laughed again. The conversation flowed pretty easily between the two of us. Before I knew it, we were pulling up at the hotel.

“Well, here we are,” she said.

“We are. I kind of don’t want the conversation to end, but I do have to get some rest.”

“Well, why don’t you give me your number—”

It was my turn to laugh as she handed me her phone.

“I thought I was supposed to ask for your number?” I put my number in, send myself a text and then I hand her the phone back.

“Nah, it’s 2021. I’ll call you.”

She leans over and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Good night, Morgan.”

“Wow. You sure you don’t wanna come up for a minute?”

“Nah, I have to be on set early tomorrow. But text me when you guys get to Portland. I’ll try to catch the game.”

“Will do. Good night, Cassie.”

I step out of the car and watch her pull away before walking away from the hotel.
