Pelicans land in the playoffs with a 50-win season

The Pelicans have arrived. Thanks in large part to rookie sensation, Morgan Sauce.
The New Orleans Pelicans finished this season with 50 wins. 50 wins. That’s a huge feat in the NBA, let alone in the Western Conference. This is only the second time in the history of the franchise that this has happened. The first being in 2007-08 where they went 56-27 and made it to the Western Conference Semifinals losing to the San Antonio Spurs in 7 games. Back then Chris Paul, David West, and Tyson Chandler were the stars. Not even under the leadership of Anthony Davis did the Pelicans pick up 50 wins.
The Pelicans went on a 7-game win streak in April and secured win number 50 in a 20-point blowout of the San Antonio Spurs.
And the secret has been in the Sauce. Morgan Sauce to be exact. The Pelicans’ rookie averaged 26 points per game this season.
“It’s a nice feeling,” said Sauce. “We did it together.” The Pelicans lucked up with the signing of not one but two standout rookies in last year’s draft as they had the number one pick in Zion Williams. Despite a few injuries that kept him out earlier in the season, Williamson finished the season with over 18 points and 9 rebounds per game.
“This was definitely the goal when we came in this season,” said Williamson. “Once the draft was over, we met with Jrue [Holiday] and JJ [Redick] and we kind of talked about where we saw ourselves fitting in with the team and what we wanted to accomplish. Just having that kind of veteran leadership from Day One was really important.”
There was another bit of motivation from the veterans this season as well.
“JJ told us that he had never missed the playoffs in his NBA career. That definitely set the tone for us,” Zion joked.
Fortunately, the rookies did not disappoint.
