“One last question, Morgan.”

“Sure thing, Patty.”

“What are your thoughts on the most recent trade?”

I pause for a second and gather my thoughts. I didn’t expect them to ask me this. I’m not one of the team’s leaders. At least not yet. Hell, I just got the starting job less than two weeks ago. Right before we left Phoenix, Coach Gentry told us that Derrick Favors would not be joining us on the flight to Dallas. We had traded him that same night for Ricky Rubio.

“Um, I don’t really have a particular thought on it. I mean, you come into an organization and you work to build bonds with the guys in the locker room because we’re all brothers in arms. But on the other hand, it is a business and you have to trust that management is doing what’s best for the team.”

When I saw there weren’t any more questions, I headed out of the arena and back to the hotel to get changed.

“Parties are always better after a win, right, fam?”

“That’s facts.”

My cousin Jerome had flown in from Cali to hang out for a few days. We were currently on a small win streak and I had just been informed about my first appearance for Beats. There were hosting a small party in Dallas and they asked if I could stop by and do some promotional shots while I was in town. I know my cousin likes stuff like this, so I figured I’d have him tag along for the night.

We arrive at the Bomb Factory and the place is packed. There are cameras everywhere and they even have a red carpet. I stop to take a few pictures when I see Zion a few feet behind me, so of course photographers ask for a few photos of the both of us. We finally get inside and we’re ushered to a roped off area close to the stage.

My cousin immediately went to the bar to get a drink for himself and water for me. My agent Tyler showed up a few moments later with Luka Dončić in tow. I had met with him earlier that morning for a meeting with some folks at Gatorade who wanted to talk about making me one of their athletes. I didn’t expect him to show up tonight, but I wasn’t surprised that he was here. He was always in hustle mode.

“Glad you were able to make it out tonight, Mojo.”

“No doubt.”

“You know Luka, right?”

“I mean, I just played him about an hour ago. So, I would say so. What’s up, man?”

“I’m good. Good game tonight.”

“Thanks. You too. So, Tyler, how do you know Luka?”

He leaned in so I could hear him, “I’m not as small time as you think.” He laughed. “It’s business. We’re always building and branding.”

We talked shop for a few minutes and then I introduced Jerome to the both of them when he got back. Not soon after Tyler left to make his rounds.

“Make sure you do some mingling around here. You have a few fans in the building, don’t stay holed up in this booth all night. Remember what I said.”

I nodded and watched as he disappeared into the crowd.

“So that’s your boy. Seems chill. Real California. Katrice did a good job with that introduction.”

“She really did.”

“What did he want you to remember?”

“He was just talking about always building my brand.”

“Oh, you a brand now, Cuzzo?”

“Yeah and it’s only gonna get bigger. Let’s go shake some hands.”

We finished our drinks and made our way to make nice with the guys in suits.
