Looks Can Be Deceiving
I’m sitting at Denny’s on Foothill Boulevard, waiting for this agent to show up.
“Morgan Sauce?”
I look up to see this skinny white guy with curly hair and a cheap brown suit standing at the table.
“Yeah. Uh, you Tyler?”
He smiled and takes a seat across from me.
“Yeah. Tyler Bailey. I heard you were looking for an agent.”
“You work at Wasserman?”
“Who were you expecting? Some Bill Duffy type in a slick suit?”
I shrug my shoulders. Roman and his damn hookups. I don't know how I let him talk me into this.
“Kind of.”
“Nah, man, that’s not me. I know I’m young, I think we can help each other out.”
“How’s that?”
“We both have something to prove. You to the NBA and me to the rest of the world. I know your story. Young, full of promise, injured. Then you got caught up in a call to action. Which I respect by the way, but it turned some NBA scouts off. I stand with Kap too. You feel me?”
“Am I being punked?”
“I’m serious. I thought it was cool. That’s why when I got the call from my girl Katrice, I knew I had to meet you. She called me specifically. We both need a win. And I’m here to help you get that.”
It was still hard to believe. But I listened to him talk. He had a pretty convincing argument.
“Alright, Tyler. Let’s give it a shot.”
“My man. Look, I’m not gonna lie to you, but you’ve got a lot of work to do. Right now, you’re looking at late second round at best.”
“At best?”
“The Kaepernick support cost you a little bit. But I think that you can change some folks’ minds before June. Looks can be deceiving. We’re gonna show them what you’ve got. You are more than your beliefs.”
“Damn, man, I like that! You went all Jerry McGuire on me and shit! Let’s get it done.”
“That’s what I like to hear! I have a trainer that I’m gonna set you up with a trainer. She is the best in the business. Make this greasy ass meal your last though.”
He pulled out his cell phone and started texting. “I’m getting your meal plan all set up. I’ll email it to you later. Let’s make it happen. This is a new beginning!”
I liked the sound of that. A new beginning.
