The locker room was completely silent. We all saw what happened. We couldn’t believe it happened, but it did. At practice. Of all places. Not a game. But practice.

Coach Gentry came into the locker room and let out a heavy sigh. “Look, guys. Lonzo is going to be out for the rest of the season. He probably won’t be back in action until December. But we can’t let that take us off course for this season.”

I looked around the locker room at everyone nodding in agreement to what coach was saying. This was our time. Right here, right now. This season has felt so right, even when things were going completely left. But this was a whole other beast. This wasn’t just an off night from one of us. Our brother was out of commission.

“He’s going to have surgery tomorrow morning.” Coach Gentry continued to discuss Lonzo’s status with us.

After a few more minutes Lonzo came into the locker room to get some things. I walked over to him and stood silently for a minute.

“We’re gonna do this for you.”

“Don’t make this about me.”

“You know we were on a roll. This was getting too good. But we’re gonna finish this shit for you. Shake back, bro. Then we can repeat next season.” I smile.

He smiles back. “I’m with that.”

I leave him to finish packing up and then I gather my things from my locker. Before he leaves he turns to address the rest of the guys who were just standing around.

“This is pretty fucked up,” he said with a dry chuckle. “I didn’t see things ending like this for me this season. But I need y’all to keep going. For me. I’ll be cheering you guys on every step of the way. See you fellas on the other side.”

Everybody offered their well wishes and Lonzo took off. Everyone started filing out, leaving just me, Jrue, Brandon and Zion in the locker room.

“This kind of puts a damper on the season, huh?” Zion asked.

“It does, but it doesn’t end it. Injuries happen, it sucks that it happened now and that it’s going to leave him sidelined for the rest of the season.” Jrue said.

“We just gotta keep moving forward, right?”

“Yeah, B. This is our team. This is our year. We can’t let this stop us,” I responded.

“Well, then it’s settled,” Brandon said. “The goal remains unchanged. Championship or bust.”

We’re so close. We can’t stop. We won’t stop.
