Although the Pelicans take over the league with 73-9 record, "Work starts now"

The Pelicans returned with renewed focus this season. Behind the leadership of MVP candidate Morgan Sauce, they look to reach the ultimate goal.

Last season New Orleans was swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers, so they did what any respectable team would do, they reloaded for the second season. And it shows. The Pelicans finished with a record of 73-9, a franchise best record. They also tied for the league’s best record as the Golden State Warriors posted the same record in 2016. New Orleans went on a 20 game win streak that was ended by Chris Paul and the Oklahoma City Thunder. New Orleans has not looked this strong since they were led by Chris Paul in 2008, where they made it to the Western Conference Finals before being eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs.

Last season, New Orleans was happy to be in contention. Especially after losing Anthony Davis in a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, they were looking for redemption and managed to find it in the duo of Zion Williamson and Morgan Sauce. Unfortunately, they were ousted from the playoffs at the hands of Davis and the Lakers last season.

But the Pelicans look different this season. Not just in terms of their roster, but in the way that they play. This team is young and hungry.

“Yeah, no more happy to be here,” said Sauce. Sauce finished the season averaging 33.3 points per game, earning the title of scoring leader. He also averaged almost 8 assists per game. “That was last season. We were good being in the conversation. We wanted to show that we could stand on our own even though some people decided to abandon ship. The real work starts now.”

Unfortunately for the Pelicans, injuries are starting to pile up. They will be without Jeff Green until the Western Conference Finals if they can make it to that stage due to an ankle injury. They also lost Lonzo Ball to a season ending Achilles’ injury at the end of last month. Ball averaged 7 points and 6.6 assists per game for the Pelicans this season.

“We’re playing this post season for our brother,” said Zion Williamson. “He’s going to be in our thoughts this entire post season. This championship run is for Lonzo.”
