Hawks Win Zion Williamson Sweepstakes in 2019 Draft Lottery

Image
The Atlanta Hawks have won the NBA Draft Lottery and will likely have the honour of selecting Zion Williamson with the #1 overall pick in the draft. The new expansion teams, the Jacks and Sonics, were not eligible to participate in the lottery, and were instead awarded the 5th and 6th picks in the draft respectively. Major losers from the lottery are the Knicks and Bulls who free-fell from the 1st and 4th best odds all the way down to the 7th and 8th picks. Disaster situations for two struggling but storied franchises.

Lottery Order
1.) Hawks
2.) Cavaliers
3.) Wizards
4.) Suns
5.) Jacks
6.) Sonics
7.) Knicks
8.) Bulls
9.) Pelicans
10.) Grizzlies
11.) Hawks (via DAL)
12.) Timberwolves
13.) Lakers
14.) Hornets
15.) Heat
16.) Celtics (via SAC)

Love the changes you made. How many games are you gonna play?
Plan for now is to try to play most of them. If not might just do like one a week or something

Seattle Sonics Hire Ime Udoka as Head Coach

Image
The Seattle Sonics have found their first head coach. Just days after the draft lottery, they have signed Ime Udoka to a four year contract worth over $10 million to be their head coach. Udoka had a solid 7-year playing career, earning the reputation of someone who is well respected in the locker room as a leader and tactician. That reputation has carried over to the coaching realm where he spent the last 7 years under the tutelage of Gregg Popovich as an assistant. The 76ers were looking to hire him to their staff this summer, but he rebuffed their offer when the chance to finally become a head coach came calling with the Sonics.

Udoka has northwestern roots having grown up in Portland, Oregon and also played extensively for the Portland Trail Blazers. He should be right at home in Seattle and the Northwestern division and bring and young, fresh and exciting approach to the team's style of play going forwards. His Nigerian citizenship and past experience playing for their national team are also said to be assets that should help the Sonics attract talent from Africa, a continent that is beginning to explode with basketball talent as the sport becomes more relevant there and the Basketball Africa League gets ready for its inaugural season in 2020-21.

2019 NBA Free Agency: Kawhi Stays North, Durant to South Beach

Image
What an incredible free agency period. The first shock came with Kawhi Leonard announcing at 12:01am on July 1st that he would be staying with the Toronto Raptors. It was mayhem from there. Kemba Walker joined forces with LeBron and AD in Los Angeles, Kyrie went to the other side of LA to rival LeBron with Paul George, New York native Tobias Harris linked up with the Knicks for big money and D'Angelo Russell signed a big deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. After some key re-signings happened with Jimmy Butler and Klay Thompson staying in Philly and Golden State respectively, Kevin Durant made the biggest splash of all in free agency. He went to Miami to team up with... well... nobody. It seems Durant has bought into whatever project Pat Riley sold him and will finally have his own team in South Beach that can be built around him. The Warriors didn't leave empty-handed though as they received Hassan Whiteside in return in the sign and trade, giving them an excellent long-term option at the 5.

Amid all the chaos of free agency, the expansion Sonics quietly made some great moves. First, they completed a trade with the Lakers, sending Courtney Lee to Los Angeles for Moritz Wagner and a 2020 2nd Round Pick to clear cap space and get a couple young assets back in return. They then proceeded to sign Malcolm Brogdon (26), Kelly Oubre (23) and Thomas Bryant (22) to reasonable, long-term contracts. These are players who can contribute now and will only improve over the next 4-5 years, so it signifies that the Sonics are trying to win now while also building a stronger team that can compete for titles in the future. They also clearly will not be going with the tanking approach.

In the latter half of free agency a few more big signings were made, with the Kings doling out an inexplicable amount of cash to the 30-year-old center, DeAndre Jordan, and the Clippers adding some strength to their frontcourt in the form of Enes Kanter. We certainly have an exciting season ahead.

I don't really have a good iso guy, but we have a lot of good shooters, two way guys and unselfish players. Going to try to play uptempo and take a lot of shots from outside to stretch defenses.
