Lakers-Timberwolves contest is the most anticipated of the season

The Minnesota Timberwolves (XX-XX) will host the Los Angeles Lakers (XX-XX) in what is the most anticipated matchup of the season. It’s a preview to the likely Western Conference Finals matchup and oh, aren’t we in for a treat.

D’Angelo Russell • The biggest storyline other than the two heavyweights of the Western Conference is how D’Angelo Russell has transformed into one of the best point guards in the NBA, after being jettisoned from Los Angeles after the Lakers drafted him second overall five years ago. Russell downplayed any grudges for this game instead telling local media he’s focused on getting the team an important victory. The victory will be important for the Timberwolves as it will allow them to remain atop of the Conference and widen the deficit between themselves and the Lakers. But, the big question is how important is the contest to Russell,

Timberwolves will continue with change in the line-up • The Timberwolves recently inserted Omari Spellman into the starting line-up as the center and moved Karl Anthony-Towns to power forward. They’ve struggled at power forward this season, and switching Towns and installing another true center made them a better team defensively on the court. The Timberwolves biggest need is power forward. They may address that in the draft or in free agency. They may also keep Towns at power forward and go after a center through the aforementioned processes.

The Los Angeles Lakers matchup is the most anticipated of the season • And why would it not. Both teams are atop of the Western Conference with little between them. The Timberwolves have been the biggest surprise of the season so far. A win against the Lakers will be huge, since they have already racked up wins and sweeps over the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers respectively. The game against the Lakers will show us who the Timberwolves are.

Minnesota remain top of Western Conference with huge home stand against LA Lakers

Wow, what a game. At one point, the Timberwolves couldn’t handle the playoff-like atmosphere and lost their composure. They then allowed the Lakers to get comfortable and build a 19 point lead.

For all the storylines this season may run, the most fitting may be how D’Angelo Russell buried the Lakers in Minnesota, to keep the Timberwolves atop the Western Conference. Once a castoff from the Lakers, Russell has turned into a superstar who is set to, more than likely, take his team to the postseason. Yes, only half of the games have been played this season – but the Timberwolves have been consistently great this season. They’ve swept the 76ers, who have the best record in the Eastern Conference, have swept the Golden State Warriors – who dominated the NBA the past half-decade and just vanquished their greatest threat to the top of the Conference… for now.

How’s that Power Rankings, who unanimously had the Lakers ahead of the Timberwolves for all of the season. That should change – mind you, although they were right until 6:01 remaining in the fourth quarter when the Timberwolves tied the game up. Then came the three pointer from Karl Anthony-Towns with 5:05 remaining to give them a 105-103 lead before a three point shot by D’Angelo Russell, gave them a 123-118 lead which put the game away with 45 seconds remaining.

Minnesota played catchup for the majority of the game. At times, they came within 5 but then allowed the Lakers to widen the lead. Then it all changed late in the third quarter, before the Timberwolves outscored the Lakers by 13 in the third. The catchup can be attributed to Ben McLemore’s insanely hot run, where he netted 5 of 8 field goals and scored 25 points in 17 minutes of game time. Tonight was the night the Timberwolves know they can let Malik Beasley walk in free agency if they can’t afford him. McLemore was outstanding. The best player on the court and the one who had the most impact on the game.

The Wolves were excellent from beyond the arc, hitting 23 of their 41 attempts. 69 of their 126 points came from the three point range. D’Angelo Russel hit 5 of 9, with his most important two coming within the final two minutes of the game. Interestingly enough, he still hasn’t received enough votes for the All-Star game – which just a month away. Kelly Oubre hit a late three pointer and finished 4 of 5 and Malik Beasley hit six three pointers to lead the team, although he attempted 11.

Minnesota can’t fly under the radar no longer. They just downed the NBA Finals favourites on national television, with their backs up against the wall and with a former castoff who just sent a huge FU to his former team. How’s that for a Cinderella storyline?
