Russell's 35 points helps Timberwolves respond with series-tying 121-112 victory on home court
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (GSW :: MIN)

MINNEAPOLIS, MAY 9 – On a night when the Minnesota Timberwolves needed to play their best, they simply tore a page out of Golden State’s book and did it better. With three’s reigning down on the net all night, the Minnesota Timberwolves built a 21-point lead and quelled a comeback bid by Stephen Curry in the fourth quarter to give the Timberwolves a 121-112 victory, tying the series 2-2. The Timberwolves started fast, converting 5 of their 9 buckets from deep and hit 10 of 24 by the time half-time rolled around. Golden State didn’t convert any of their five shots from the arc in the second quarter, which gave the Timberwolves a generous 64-53 lead going into the second half. Then the story was written. The Golden State castoff. Surplus to their requirements. D’Angelo Russell became a thorn in their side yet again, leading the game with 35 points, coming down with four rebounds off the glass and distributing 9 assists and registering 3 steals in a performance where he shot 4 of 8 from the arc. “Sheer brilliance,” said teammate Kelly Oubre Jr, who himself finished with 27 points but struggled in the second half with just shooting 22% from the field. The Warriors chipped at the Timberwolves’ lead late in the third quarter and almost drew level with 3:26 remaining in the game, when Curry’s three point shot closed the deficit to just a 111-108 Minnesota lead.

“They responded how I wanted them to,” said coach Ryan Saunders after the game. “We were intensive on defense, we didn’t allow them the shots they wanted. The Timberwolves stayed out of foul trouble, conceding just 11. Golden State, on the other hand, had to endure a night of aggressive play in the paint from Minnesota – committing 20 fouls. D’Angelo Russell went 9 of 12 from the free throw line, Karl Anthony-Towns converted 7 of his 10 opportunities and Malik Beasley went 5 of 6. Minnesota looked sluggish, lost and defeated in game three when Golden State came out and hammered them at home. They responded with a night you could only want. With momentum on their side, and now a best of 3 for the remainder of the series, Minnesota will travel back to San Francisco for a pivotal game 5. “We’re gonna focus on this next game,” said Anthony-Towns after the game. “This game is over, the series is alive. You know, we have to do our bit to try end the series early.” It’s a tough ask for Minnesota to make it a six games series. The Warriors have just lost twice in the last 8 postseason appearances outside of an NBA Finals appearance. The Clippers eliminated them from the first round back in 2014 – which took them seven games to do so. The year before, the Spurs eliminated them in six games.

As for Minnesota, they’ve never been this deep into the postseason before with the exception of their 2004 Conference Finals series against the Los Angeles Lakers. This will be completely new territory for the Cinderella story team which has the nation supporting them. Tonight, the Minnesota Timberwolves got back to winning basketball and played the formula that was so successful during the regular season. Shoot from the arc and suffocate and attack from within the paint. They did just that while doing enough to force Stephen Curry to just 24 points on offense, while Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins had relatively quiet nights, picking up just 22 and 16 points respectively.

Minnesota snap losing habits with strong game 5 showing, setting up elimination scenario for game 6
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MIN :: GSW)

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 11 – The Minnesota Timberwolves are just one win away from returning to the Western Conference Finals are an almost two decade absence. Thanks to a dominant first half, where they outshoot the Warriors 56 to 39% and owned the glass 28 to 15, the Timberwolves built a commanding lead and took game 5 of the series, 111-96, and now leads the series 3-2, setting up the first elimination game. While Stephen Curry did his best to cut the deficit from 30 points to 15 points, the Warriors were caught out. In the first quarter, Josh Okogie forced two steals and Minnesota hit 4 of 8 from deep to give themselves a 32-23 lead going into the second quarter. “We talked about responding and I don’t think it gets better than that,” said Karl Anthony-Towns, who finished the game with 22 points and 20 rebounds. Towns was dominant inside the paint, scoring 16 in that region of the court. The biggest impact can be attributed to Kelly Oubre’s style of play. He led the Timberwolves with 25 points and scored on 7 of his 12 free throws. His aggressive play towards the bucket forced Andrew Wiggins to foul out late in the third quarter, with Minnesota leading 79-61. “He was clever about it,” admitted Warriors head coach Steven Kerr. “He forced Wiggins to contest the shot and commit a foul.

Malik Beasley enjoyed a strong second quarter, where he went on an air raid and netted 4 of his 5 3-point shots. He finished the game with 22 points. 18 of his points came from beyond the arc and those 18 points contributed heavily to a 30 point lead. While D’Angelo Russell had a quiet night on the stat sheet, having scored just 15 points and 2 assists, his presence was known. When called upon, he did what he needed to do. He went 6 of 12 from the field and scored 7 rebounds off the glass. In a defensive effort, Russell played well against Curry and came out the better player of the game. The third quarter was a sloppy affair. Minnesota hit just 1 of their 10 field goals to begin the game while Golden State closely mirrored, going 1 of 10. “We took it a little too easy,” admitted head coach Ryan Saunders. “Fortunately, we were out with such a big lead. The defense played lights out tonight. You couldn’t expect a greater response than following up two big losses with this statement victory in their house.” Golden State never led in this game, they played from behind and their poor shooting was a contributing factor to their loss. “You can’t go 15 of 48 from the arc and believe you’re going to win, not against this team,” said Stephen Curry. Curry led the Warriors with 29 points. He went 10 of 25 from the field which included 6 of 18 3-pointers. Klay Thompson had a night to forget, going 3 of 10 from deep and Jordan Poole was careless with the ball, turning the ball over 3 times.

No team has eliminated the Warriors since the Spurs did it over 7 years ago. The Timberwolves have a chance to send Golden State home early – cancelling out an All-California Western Conference Finals matchup. Who would have thought at the start of the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Clippers would meet in the Western Conference Finals? Not many people. Minnesota can’t get ahead of themselves. They know the Warriors will come at them hard in game six with the intent to return the series to San Francisco where they can punch their ticket to a sixth-consecutive Conference Finals appearance. The Timberwolves are so inexperienced in this area of the NBA. Jeremy Lin is the only player on the Minnesota Timberwolves’ roster which has won an NBA Finals or even appeared in one. “He’s been great,” stated guard D’Angelo Russell. “He’s told us the approach we’ve needed to take and we have been following it. We know the game in our house will be huge. We have to come ready like we did tonight and put in the work.”

Minnesota punch ticket to Conference Finals for first time in 16 years after offensive onslaught against Golden State
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (GSW :: MIN)

MINNEAPOLIS, MAY 13 – The wait is over. The Minnesota Timberwolves are finally returning to the Western Conference Finals, after dispatching the Golden State Warriors at home in game 6 of this Western Conference Semifinals matchup, where they won three consecutive to overturn a 2-1 series deficit. The Timberwolves are now just four games away from appearing in their first NBA Finals. Despite an impressive start, where the Warriors held a 12-0 lead and the Timberwolves started just 1 of 6 from the field, the Wolves clawed their way back in the first quarter to take a 24-19 lead, thanks to Malik Beasley contributing heavily with his three-point bombardment. The Timberwolves went 5 of 9 from the arc to help put them in the lead. Golden State would again, start strong, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead as they desperately tried to level the series. Once again, Minnesota clawed their way back and forced a 51-51 tie going into half-time. “What we saw tonight was just our sheer resistance of wanting this series to go on any longer,” said head coach Ryan Saunders. “I didn’t call out the timeouts when we were ten points down at both stages. I just told the team to stick to what we have been doing all season long. Trust the process.” Trust the process they did as the second half was a completely different story.

The Warriors couldn’t have had a worse quarter. Minnesota came out firing, hitting their first two shots from beyond the arc, quickly mounting a 16-0 lead. “That was it,” said guard Malik Beasley, contributed 21 points and 6 three-pointers to the victory. “When they would try to get back into the game, we hit one from deep. They got tilted and called timeouts.” The Timberwolves were possessed on defense. Karl Anthony-Towns recorded 20 off the glass and registered 3 blocks. His 10 points may be seen as having minimal impact but his defense told the story of the game. Naz Reid contributed 2 blocks and Kelly Oubre capped off his 19 points with 10 rebounds and a block of his own. “Hats off to them,” said Stephen Curry. “They were the better team this series.” Curry struggled, despite leading the Warriors with 23 points. He shot 8 of 23 from the field which included 5 of 17 from 3-point territory. Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins disappeared in the second half as they finished with 15 and 13 points respectively.

The talk of the town will be D’Angelo Russell’s performance this series. He willed the Minnesota comeback with a game-high 27 points, he also dished out 13 assists. “He’s the best guard in the league, it’s that simple,” said Josh Okogie, who finished with 13 points and shot 5 of 10 from the field, with 3 assists from Russell. The Warriors dealt Russell to the Timberwolves as he was surplus to their requirements. They now have the rest of the summer to think about ‘what if’ they didn’t deal the guard way. Russell has guided the Timberwolves to their first Conference Finals in sixteen years. They’ve been back to the postseason just once since, a first round exit to the Houston Rockets two seasons ago. With the Los Angeles Clippers sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers, the Timberwolves will have home court advantage in the Western Conference Finals, and will be the favourite going into the series, especially with Kawhi Leonard having a sprained ankle, although the Clippers believe he will be day-to-day and start game 1.
