Philadelphia level series after stealing Game 4 on Minnesota’s home court after trailing early
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (PHI :: MIN)

MINNEAPOLIS, JUNE 4 -- For the first time this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves held an early lead. Sometimes the cookies just don’t fall your way as the Philadelphia 76ers clinched Game 4, XXX-XXX, with a last second bucket to level the series, 2-2, heading back home for a critical Game 5 showdown. With 2.2 seconds left in the game, the Minnesota Timberwolves nailed their second free-throw from Malik Beasley to take a 110-109 lead. Philadelphia called the timeout and quickly forced a throw within the perimeter to Joel Embiid who scored before the buzzer, leaving Minnesota with no time to answer. “It was poorly defended,” said Minnesota’s head coach Ryan Saunders. “Huge lapse of concentration error and that’s unexplainable and unacceptable.” Could this be the critical moment of when the 76ers won the 2020 NBA Finals? Every season there’s defining moments. None more so than the lack of preparation heading out of the huddle from these young Timberwolves’. They had done everything right up until that bucket. Outscored Philadelphia, 38-28, hit 8 of their 13 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and outscored them, 19-2, in fast break points. It wasn’t Philadelphia’s greatest game but they secured the victory, despite shooting 2 of 24 from 3-point range. A recurring issue for the Timberwolves has been their inability to defend the paint at times. Tonight was one of those nights, with Philadelphia scoring 66 in the region while Minnesota lagged far behind with 38.

It was the big boys who made the statement in the fourth for Philly. Joel Embiid scored 10 and made all four of his baskets. Ben Simmons led the team with 11 points and went 5 of 6. Minnesota’s comeback was sparked by a valiant display from D’Angelo Russell who scored 20 points in the third quarter alone – hitting 7 of his 13 field goals which included 4 of 5 from deep. The rest of the team? Not so good. Karl Anthony-Towns who scored 23 points and 20 rebounds recorded 13 points in the first quarter and recorded just 8 more combined in the second and third quarter. Minnesota shot well, they made the plays from three-point range but allowed Philadelphia to bully and push them around in their own paint during the second half of the game. “It wasn’t great D by us,” said Towns, who recorded 2 blocks on the night.

Both teams have made a statement and split the home and road series. Tonight Joel Embiid finally showed up, scoring 24 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and forcing 3 blocks. Rookie Matissse Thybulle rebounded from a quiet Game 2 and 3 with 21 points and Ben Simmons came up big in the fourth quarter after continuously driving to the basket, owning the paint against the Timberwolves. The series is all tied up. Minnesota could have been travelling to Philadelphia with a 3-1 series lead. You could say the same for Philadelphia. The series has been close and unpredictable. The tie makes sense. There’s no clear greater team so far. Philadelphia will have one more chance at home to show they can win their first NBA title in almost four decades. They have all the momentum now.

Minnesota ride KAT’s 54 points, triple-triple, as Timberwolves down 76ers 131-118 to take 3-2 series lead
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MIN :: PHI)

PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 7 -- There’s monster nights, statement nights and then there’s that night which may just put you into the Hall of Fame someday. Welcome to that night, after Karl Anthony-Towns destroyed the Philadelphia 76ers on a cerebral night which saw him score a triple-triple as Minnesota took down Philadelphia, 131-118 to take Game 5, setting up their first possible NBA Finals Championship series in three nights’ time. “He just couldn’t be stopped,” said D’Angelo Russell. “Why give anyone else the ball when he’s continuing to put up the numbers?”. After leading the 76ers with 24 points in Game 4, Joel Embiid followed up with a foul out and 11 points. He watched the majority of the fourth quarter from the bench as his counterpart scored 54 points in what was an incredible performance. Anthony-Towns added 18 boards off the glass and dished out 10 assists. “This was the type of night you expect your leader to have,” commented Ryan Saunders after the game. “He went and did everything to put Minnesota in the drivers seat. You can’t ask anymore than what your leader can do tonight. He scored, he rebounded, his aggressive style drew fouls and he distributed among his teammates. You can’t ask for anything more.”

All the noise will be out Karl Anthony-Towns’ performance, but Kelly Oubre Jr silently put together a solid 26 point performance which saw him shoot 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. D’Angelo Russell (16), Malik Beasley (14) and Naz Reid (10) all scored into the double-digits to help give Minnesota a 3-2 lead in the 2020 NBA Finals series, which is quickly drawing to an end. Two games or one more game. You can feel it in the air around Minnesota. They feel they have the series. Their cornerstone putting up unbelievable numbers to give them that home court to put the 76ers away for good. Game 7 isn’t an option for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are still looking for their first NBA Championship and are just one victory away from tasting basketball immortality.

The 76ers will be disappointed. Joel Embiid was outclassed. Ben Simmons (27) was forced to pick up the slack as the Philadelphia 76ers came out sluggish from the get go. They’ve already stated they’ve made one change for Game 6. Josh Richardson (22) will re-enter the starting line-up at shooting guard while rookie Matisse Thybulle (8) returns to the bench after having an inconsistent Finals series. This was suppose to be the 76ers night. Their home crowd send off after levelling up the series in Game 4 and hoping to finish the Timberwolves off in Game 6. Now the 76ers will have to travel back up to the North to face a franchise, whose fans will be in a frenzy. It’s not impossible for the 76ers but after a night in which Karl Anthony-Towns put 54 on the board; can you be anymore demoralised than the vibes emitting from the Philly bench as Game 5 came to an end?
