Russell's postseason career-high 40 points sees the Timberwolves take game 1 of the WCSF against the Warriors
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MIN :: GSW)

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 3 – D’Angelo Russell provided a second half spark that propelled the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 1117-109 game 1 victory over the Golden State Warriors in the 2020 Western Conference Semifinals. Russell, scored 14 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth as he set a career high in the postseason with 40 points against his former team. In a fiercely contested game, where there were over 16 lead changes and 10 ties, the Minnesota Timberwolves did what they have done all season long – come through and found a way to win. It wasn’t a particularly great fourth quarter for the Warriors. Malik Beasley scored Minnesota’s first seven points of the quarter while Golden State lagged behind, going 2 of 8 from the field. They would end the quarter 9 of 29 (31%) from the field. As the game progressed, Minnesota heated up. They scored 43% from the field in the first, 46% in the second and 52% in the third – thanks to Russell, who went 5 of 9 in 8 minutes of action. Karl Anthony-Towns hit all of his five field goals to give him 10 points for the quarter. “He made the plays required, the plays we know he can make and the plays he wants to make. He wants the ball in his hand with the outcome at stake,” said Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders. While Andrew Wiggins put 31 points up against his former team and Stephen Curry scoring 29 points, all eyes were on Minnesota’s response to a nine point deficit in the third quarter.

While Minnesota enjoyed a fourth quarter resurgence, after Anthony Wiggins’ last second 3-pointer in the third quarter gave them the lead, you can’t help and think if the Warriors are heading for the exit after so many years of dominance atop the Western Conference. Stephen Curry hit just 5 of his 9 field goals in the fourth quarter. He was far from the best player on the court tonight. That can be rewarded to D’Angelo Russell, who played the night of his career. That shouldn’t distract from the real underlying reason why the Minnesota Timberwolves came away as winners. The whole team played consistently good, with a different player having an impact in each quarter. While Kelly Oubre Jr didn’t have the double-digit mouth watering game, he did score six points in the first quarter and instilled energy on Minnesota’s side of the court. In a winning effort, Oubre finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Jeremy Lin lit a fire for the Timberwolves coming off the bench in the second quarter, scoring 11 points and hitting both of his three-point attempts. Russell’s 14 points in the third quarter allowed the Timberwolves to keep up with the Warriors in scoring and Malik Beasley’s fourth quarter fast start allowed them to take their first lead since the second quarter and Russel’s end game dominance gave them the much deserved victory.

“He’s a special player,” said Karl Anthony-Towns after the game on D’Angelo Russell. “He has a chip on his shoulder. You know the Lakers scenario, Brooklyn, the Warriors trade. The All-Star absence. He wants to show he’s the best point guard in the league.” Towns had a relatively quiet night, registering just 17 points. He made good on 7 of his 13 shots and went 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. When the Warriors allowed Towns the position to make a move in the interior, he came away with points. His 10 rebounds were second on the team behind Naz Reid’s 14. The Warriors have had problems with depth on the bench all season long. That was more apparent tonight than any loss during the regular season. The Timberwolves’ starting five ended up outplaying the Warriors’ equivalents and Minnesota’s bench did the same. Warriors coach Steven Kerr was optimistic about the Warriors chances this series but fired out a warning “Teams which go to the NBA Finals are complete. They have the offense, defense and bench to give them a well rounded venture. We have the guys that can do that, than can take us to the Finals, but we need to perform like it in game.” The Warriors will have another opportunity to show they have what it takes to get back to a sixth NBA Finals in seven years. They’ll need to defend a whole lot better if they are to return to the most coveted prize in Basketball.

Warriors tie the series 1-1, after Curry's 27 and Thompson's 26 leads them to dominant victory over Timberwolves
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MIN :: GSW)

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 5 – Just like that, the Golden State Warriors levelled the series against the Minnesota Timberwolves with an emphatic 35 point victory. Stephen Curry hit 6 3-pointers to give himself 27 points and Klay Thompson rebounded from a so-so series opener to score 26 points as the Warriors distanced themselves from the Timberwolves in the second half, outscoring them 81-47, as they claimed a 134-99 win to take game 2 – subsequently levelling the series 1-1. Head coach Steve Kerr thanked the crowd after the game. “The atmosphere was truly amazing, it really felt like home court advantage out there. It was awesome.” The inexperience on the Timberwolves’ end began to show. They committed 20 fouls, which allowed the Golden State Warriors to go to the free throw line 30 times, netting 29 of the opportunities. “We can’t afford to make mistakes like that. We can’t get into foul trouble with them,” said Minnesota head coach Ryan Saunders. The Warriors were relentless from the perimeter, converting 15 of their 39 tries (38%). Their shooting on the night was much improved from game 1. They finished 45 of 91 (49%) from the field which contributed to them having a 37 point lead at one stage of the game. The Warriors offense improved but their defense considerably improved, allowing Minnesota to score just 28 points in the paint. The Warriors’ bench also outscored the Timberwolves’, 52-34.

The most improved player from game 1 was the impact Klay Thompson had. He recorded 17 of his 26 points in the third quarter, where he went 5 of 8 from the field and scored on all 5 of his free throws. Minnesota had a rough third quarter, allowing 37 points and hitting just 8 of 22 from the field. While Golden State hit 10 of 23 from the field, they made good on 14 of their 15 free throws which gave them the lead they would never relinquish. Kelly Oubre Jr led Minnesota with 18 points and recorded 7 rebounds and 5 assists. He played aggressively in the paint and recorded 4 shooting fouls for him, going 6 of 8 from the free throw line. D’Angelo Russell, who scored 40 points in game 1, had to settle for 17 points as he shot poorly tonight – going 7 of 21 from the field. While Karl Anthony-Towns came away with 20 rebounds, he recorded just 15 points as the Warriors successfully phased him out of the game. “We have to rebound with a big night at home,” said the center. “We knew they were going to come at us hot. We held on for awhile but the game just got away from us.” Other starters Malik Beasley and Naz Reid combined for just 15 points as they had a quiet night as did sixth man Ben McLemore who scored just 5 points having gone 2 of 8 from the field.

Golden State looked dangerous tonight. Are they blossoming at the right time? Only time will tell, but tonight’s dominant win over Minnesota was telling. Can the Warriors go into Minnesota and split the series or return with a 3-1 lead back to Golden State for game 5 elimination scenario? With the Clippers up 2-0 against the Lakers, the winner of this series looks primed to represent the West in the 2020 NBA Finals.

Nice sweeping up Portland. Now you got a challenge on your hands. GL with this one, I'd say Minny in 6.

Curry, Thompson & Wiggins combine to score over 100 points as Warriors batter Timberwolves and take series lead on the road
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (GSW :: MIN)

MINNEAPOLIS, MAY 7 – With the flick of the wrist, Stephen Curry showed why he’s still one of the best players in the NBA. The Timberwolves had no answer for Golden State’s onslaught on their own court. Stephen Curry’s, Klay Thompson’s and Andrew Wiggins’ 39, 31 and 31 points helped the Warriors to a huge 135-117 victory in game three of the Western Conference Semifinals. The game began to quickly unravel early on in the second quarter when the Warriors embarked on an 18-5 run to start the first third of the second quarter, giving them a 46-34 lead. By halftime, the Warriors had a 14 point lead and outshot the Timberwolves 52% to 39%. “We didn’t play as well as we hoped,” said Karl Anthony-Towns who was held to 0 points in the final quarter. The Warriors have changed the past two games with their play in the third quarter. Klay Thompson was a nuisance on offense, scoring 16 points in the third, leaving Andrew Wiggins and Stephen Curry to score just 6 and 4 points respectively. Curry’s 21 points in the final quarter ensured the Warriors took a 2-1 series lead into game 4. Andrew Wiggins set the tone early, registering 15 points in the first quarter after going 3 of 5 from the perimeter. The Warriors attempted 13 from deep in comparison to Minnesota’s 6.

“We didn’t do what we needed tonight. It’s disappointing how we didn’t show up at home,” conceded head coach Ryan Saunders. “We haven’t played well on defense the past two games. We need to look at what has gone wrong and fix it as soon as possible,” he continued. The Warriors had lethal precision from the field tonight, netting 58% from the field in the second quarter which contributed to their dominant lead – a high of 28 which they wouldn’t relinquish. Golden State scored on 55% and 56% from the field in the third and fourth quarter to cap off a night and send a message to Minnesota: Forget about your season sweep and series opening win. There’s still games left in this series to have an outcome. D’Angelo Russell led the Timberwolves with 27 points and scored 13 points in the final quarter in their failed comeback bid. Karl Anthony-Towns who was blanketed in the final quarter, scored 20 in the first three. He collected 19 rebounds on the night.

Curry, Thompson and Wiggins combined for 101 points for the Warriors. The T-Wolves still have a chance to win this series but not if they let Golden State’s big three go off on a night they just had. If the Timberwolves can force one of the three out of the game and at least keep another in check, they have a reasonable chance of keeping pace with one of the best teams in the NBA. The next game will likely decide the series. If Golden State win three-straight, it puts them in a comfortable position to reach their sixth consecutive Western Conference Finals appearance, having gone 5-0 during that stretch. Both teams would likely fancy their chances in the Conference Finals, with the Clippers up 3-0, they’ve just lost Kawhi Leonard to an ankle sprain which will likely keep him out for 2 weeks.
