Minnesota win first NBA Finals in franchise history after holding off Philadelphia in tight Game 6 as Karl Anthony-Towns dominates once again in MVP Finals performance

MINNESOTA, JUNE 10 -- The Minnesota Timberwolves claimed their first NBA Championship in franchise history after downing the Philadelphia 76ers, 115-101 in Game 6 to claim a 4-2 series victory in the 2020 NBA Finals. How fitting it was that Kelly Oubre’s two 3-pointers in the final five minutes and D’Angelo Russell’s 3-point jumpshot with 1:33 left on the clock to give them a 109-99 lead. In an incredibly tight contest, the Minnesota Timberwolves prevailed after they converted 16 of their 35 3-point shots while shooting 47% from the field. “They worked so hard this season, it’s unbelievable,” said Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders. The Minnesota Timberwolves went from lottery draft pick to NBA Champions overnight. The overhaul of the roster which started last year which saw the arrivals of D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Kelly Oubre Jr has paid dividends. “We always knew we had the best roster in the league. We just had to show it,” said Oubre. The small forward was traded from Phoenix to Minnesota the day after Christmas and led the Timberwolves with 29 points after nailing 6 of his 13 3-point attempts. D’Angelo Russell was as lethal as always, scoring 27 points and dishing out 9 assists. This Finals series has put his name in contention as one of the best point guards in the league. What a comeback and turnaround story for an individual who was left out to die in Los Angeles not too long ago. Karl Anthony-Towns who scored 52 points in Game 6 followed through with 23 points after going 8 of 13 from the field. His aggressiveness towards the net paid off after Joel Embiid was fouled out early in the fourth for the second consecutive game.

It’s a disappointing end for Philadelphia who tore their way through the playoffs, only losing three times until they met Minnesota. At one point, they looked ready to win the NBA Finals. After Josh Richardson’s Game 5 performance, the 76ers benched Matisse Thybulle for Richardson. While Richardson scored 13, which was best for third on the team, he didn’t provide the spark the rookie did back in Game 1. He was outplayed by his counterpart, Malik Beasley, who scored 15 points and went 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. When the game most mattered during this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves showed up. D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, Kelly Oubre Jr, Karl Anthony-Towns and Naz Reid all had their moments through the postseason where they had to carry the team or perform superbly in a complimentary supporting role. The Minnesota Timberwolves have one of the youngest rosters in the league and now they’re NBA Champions. Starter Malik Beasley is headed for free agency as are Josh Okogie and Ben McLemore. They can’t keep everyone but they’ll retain enough of the nucleus to be a threat for the foreseeable future. “This one’s for Flip,” commented head coach Ryan Saunders, the son of Timberwolves’ legend Flip Saunders, who passes away from cancer almost five years ago.

The Finals MVP award deservedly goes to Karl Anthony-Towns, who averaged 29.8 points, 13.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game throughout the series. His 54 points in Game 5 will forever be etched in postseason lore, whether it’s in the deep archives of NBA Films in decades to come or somewhere proudly presented with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He rose to the occasion this postseason and he’s done what Kevin Garnett could never accomplish in Minnesota. He’s got a wealth of talent around him, one of the best supporting casts in the NBA. That’s why, after the game, the Finals MVP warned the rest of the NBA “We’re coming for the title defense, get ready.”
