Philadelphia convincingly beat Minnesota in Game 1 after meticulous night from the field

PHILADELPHIA, MAY 28 -- Sometimes change is necessary. In this case, it was beneficial to the Philadelphia 76ers. Hours before tip-off, the Philadelphia 76ers made the brash but brave decision to replace veteran Josh Richardson in the starting line-up with rookie Matisse Thybulle. Hours later, the unknown rookie had played a huge role in the Philadelphia 76ers slaughtering the Minnesota Timberwolves, 131-98. The rookie, who never played in the regular season and had accrued only 290 minutes throughout the postseason, came through big by leading the 76ers with 22 points. Minnesota were so weak defending the interior, the buckets landed plenty and often for the 76ers, who struggled to miss the net. Eight players recorded double-digit points, with Philly’s bench outscoring Minnesota’s, 60-28 while scoring 56 of their 131 points in the paint. The move for Thybulle to start was to kickstart Philadelphia’s offense, which wanted to match the firepower of Minnesota’s. They never quite needed to do that, as their second ranked defense shut the Minnesota Timberwolves completely down, helping the offense take a 44 point lead at one stage of the night. Minnesota shot badly, converting just 38% of their shots and Joel Embiid had blocked 2 shots within the first two minutes of the game. Minnesota would miss 5 of their first 6 shots. It did look positive early, when Karl Anthony-Towns nailed a three-point shot. The offense would never materialise and Philadelphia coasted to a Game 1 victory.

“We didn’t play well enough, it’s that simple. We chose Game 1 of the NBA Finals to play our worst game of the postseason. We can’t allow that,” said Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders. While Anthony-Towns led the team with 28 points, he struggled for much of the night, coming down with just 3 rebounds while starting the game 1 of 6 from the field. Joel Embiid was held to 12 points but his 15 boards led the game and contributed to the 76ers out rebounding Minnesota, offensive and defensively, 76-38. There’s no doubt about it. The Minnesota Timberwolves were clearly outplayed and never looked comfortable. While D’Angelo Russell recorded 15 points, 8 assists and 3 steals while converting 3 of his 5 shots from deep, he never received the support for Minnesota to hold their early lead or mount a comeback. Kelly Oubre was a non-factor and Naz Reid was never in a position try a field goal. The 76ers bottled up the Timberwolves attack and they had no answer. If there is one silver lining to their loss, it may lie with Josh Okogie, who perhaps played the best game of his career with a 16 point night in just 18 minutes on the court. “We couldn’t do the things we wanted, it was frustrating man,” said shooting guard Malik Beasley, who had 13 points. Philadelphia had total control of the game. Backup Alec Burks had 15 points in his 20 minutes of action, which is one more minute than what Ben Simmons (12 points) played as the starters came out of the game early in the fourth quarter.

“Embarrassing loss,” said D’Angelo Russell after the game. “A lot went wrong. We still have the rest of the series to sort it out, but we can’t afford to go back to Minnesota with a 2-0 hole.” Both teams tasted victory far more than defeat this postseason. Minnesota came in with a 12-2 record. Philadelphia with a 12-3 record. Minnesota had two sweeps. Philadelphia went 4-1 in each of their 3 playoff series. Defense wins championships is the mantra proudly spoken of in American sports. Tonight was the occasion. Philadelphia’s defense forced Minnesota to shoot 29% from the field by the time half-time rolled around, giving the 76ers a 34 point lead in a 76-42 game. From the 73 games the Minnesota Timberwolves have played, it’s likely they’ll rebound from their harrowing NBA Finals series opening loss. It’s left a bad taste in their mouths. Winning in Philadelphia isn’t easy. The 76ers have enjoyed a 26-12 (.684%) home record this season, which includes the postseason. The crowd was riled up for the biggest home night in over 19 years. They were loud, proud and hostile when the Timberwolves had possession. It’s a disappointing first ever game in the NBA Finals for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who came in as the favourites to win the series. Now? Not so much after such a heavy defeat. At times they have faced adversity, they’ve rebounded. The Timberwolves will have a huge test ahead of them in Game 2, let’s see if they can rebound.

Minnesota mount ferocious comeback which results in 39 point swing as they tie up series
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MIN :: PHI)

PHILADELPHIA, MAY 30 -- It looked like it was all over by the mid-point of the second quarter. Same old story as the first game. Philadelphia dominating as Minnesota looked shaky shooting from the field early. Then, as so many games have gone in the third quarter this postseason, the Timberwolves greatly outplayed their opponent. The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a huge lapse and surrendered a 22 point lead with the Timberwolves speeding past them in the second half, leaving them in the distance of their windscreen as they claimed Game 2 of the 2020 NBA Finals, 112-95, tying up the series, which now heads to Minnesota for Games 3 and 4. It wasn’t an ideal start for Minnesota, whose weak interior defense led to Al Horford putting up 10 points in the first half, going 2 of 3 on 3-point shots when outside of travelling to the rim. If the Timberwolves are to rely on Karl Anthony-Towns, they may need to look elsewhere for the first quarter. He started slow yet again, going 1 of 6 from the field which includes all 3 failed 3-point attempts. The second quarter is when the Minnesota Timberwolves started to turn around their misfortunes. They forced 6 steals and went 5 of 14 from deep, compared to Philly’s lone 1 of 7. Minnesota improved their shooting while the 76ers shot 35% from the quarter which played a huge role in their half-time lead being cut to just five points at 59-54.

The second-half changed the complexion of the game. Minnesota outscored Philadelphia, 36-19 in the third quarter which saw the T-Wolves go 12 of 21% from the field which included 5 of 9 from deep. Philadelphia’s second quarter struggles leaked over to the second half where they shot 29% from the field in the third quarter. “It was the response we needed to make,” said head coach Ryan Saunders on his Minnesota Timberwolves. They responded perfectly. Malik Beasley, who had an awful game 1 and was shown up by a rookie, led the Timberwolves with 16 points after scoring 5 of 7 from the field which included 3 of 4 3-pointers being successful. D’Angelo Russell contributed 10 points and 4 assists and Karl Anthony-Towns netted 8 points after overcoming a slow start. 5 of his 15 rebounds came in the third quarter alone. “We sat down at half-time and we told ourselves we just had to keep doing what we had been doing all season long. We had to have faith that we would come out and put a statement second half, take the advantage back home with us,” said the tall center. Minnesota will travel back home with all the momentum after their Game 2 statement victory. The T-Wolves stunned Philly by forcing them into uncomfortable situations. What worked for Philadelphia in Game 1 failed in Game 2. Their bench, which contributed over 60 points in Game 1 had to settle for just 22 points. Alec Burks who had a promising Game 1 performance failed to leave a mark on Game 2. Rookie Matisse Thybulle, who was the star of Game 1 claimed just 13 points and went 1 of 5 from 3-point range. Tobias Harris had a nightmare Game 2 where none of his 5 3-point attempts were successful.

Ben Simmons led the 76ers with 20 points but was outplayed by his counterpart, D’Angelo Russell, who scored 24 points and dished out 7 assists in a standout performance where he hit 4 of his 6 3-pointers. Malik Beasley led the game with 29 points after his sharpshooting night. He hit 9 of 18 from the field and made the plays when he needed to. Each series there’s been a different player to step up and make a difference for Minnesota. Will this be Beasley’s series? The shooting guard is heading for free agency this summer and will cash in greatly with a terrific Finals series. Kelly Oubre left his mark with 16 points and Karl Anthony-Towns and Naz Reid were dominant against the boards, hurling in 16 and 13 rebounds respectively. MVP candidate Joel Embiid hasn’t shown up this series. In Game 2, Embiid scored just 11 points as Minnesota took him out of the game. He led the 76ers with Al Horford with 15 rebounds. The series heads back to Minnesota in two nights time and the Timberwolves have their first NBA Finals game victory in franchise history, tying the series and giving them all the momentum they need to try and establish their footprint on this Finals series.

Minnesota quell fourth quarter uprising from Philadelphia as they take 2-1 series lead in 2020 NBA Finals
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (PHI :: MIN)

MINNEAPOLIS, JUNE 2 – Behind a frenzy home crowd, the Minnesota Timberwolves shrugged off another slow start and finished off the Philadelphia 76ers, 105-101, as they take a 2-1 series in the 2020 NBA Finals. It wasn’t always a rosy picture as the 76ers at one point had a 13 point lead. Minnesota slowly carved it away and built an 18 point lead of their own before holding out against a 76ers team hell-bent on taking the series lead themselves. The 76ers took a 13-2 lead within the first three minutes of the game as Karl Anthony-Towns started 0 of 5 from the field thanks to impressive defensive skills by Joel Embiid who frustrated his counterpart from within the arc. Minnesota didn’t score on their first four opportunities which allowed the 76ers to build a commanding lead. Minnesota’s bench didn’t play particularly well in the first game – they redeemed themselves in the first quarter as they accounted for 23 of Minnesota’s 27 first quarter points. Ben McLemore scored 10, Jeremy Lin scored 6 and Josh Okogie scored 5 as they picked up the slack mainly from Karl Anthony-Towns who went 1 of 7 from the field during the first quarter.

It was all a different game thereafter. Minnesota went 11-2 to start the second quarter, hitting 5 of 6 buckets while Philadelphia went 1 for 6. Towns, who had a poor first quarter rebounded strongly in the second going 6 of 6 from the field while leading the Timberwolves with 14 second quarter points. Kelly Oubre, who had 0 points in the first quarter rebounded with 10 points in the second after going 3 of 4 from the field after being fouled three times and Josh Okogie continued chipping in with 6 points of his own as Minnesota outscored Philadelphia, 37-20, to take a commanding 64-51 halftime lead thanks to shooting 54% from the field compared to Philly’s respectable 42%. “We need to start strong,” said Towns, who was disappointed with his performance to start the game. “It will lessen the load later in the game if we’re able to control the scoreboard instead of always mounting comebacks.” Minnesota attempted 10 3-pointers in the first quarter, scoring 6. They attempted just four in the second quarter.

That trend would continue in the third quarter when Minnesota attempted just two 3-point attempts. Philadelphia’s defense tightened up as Minnesota shot 36% from the field in the third quarter. The 76ers went 12 of 22 from the field, respectable enough with their strong defense forcing the misses. However, they went 0 of 5 from beyond the arc and had no free-throws while Minnesota hit all seven of theirs. Towns once again led the T-Wolves with 11 points in this quarter while Kelly Oubre scored 5. It was a fight to the finish for these two teams. Minnesota started 1 of 10 from the field in the fourth and final quarter. Philadelphia started 3 of 10. Minnesota’s shooting was so bad in the fourth they finished with 15 points which allowed Philadelphia to chip away at their lead, ultimately giving the Timberwolves a four point victory. Ben Simmons helped mount that comeback with 26 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Joel Embiid finished second with 17 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocks. Tobias Harris finished with 16 points and rookie Matisse Thybulle rebounded from a poor Game 2 showing with 15 points, although he shot 6 of 20 from the field. The talk of Game 3 was Karl Anthony-Towns, who finished with a game high of 36 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 14 of 42 from the field while Kelly Oubre finished with the second most attempts (9). This was an offensive showing for Towns and the Timberwolves wanted to the ball in his hands. Naz Reid came through on the glass with a team high of 13 rebounds while D’Angelo Russell contributed just 9 points and 6 assists, although he did come down with 8 rebounds. Minnesota got it done and that’s all what matters as we move to an incredibly important Game 4. Minnesota can take a commanding 3-1 series lead or Philadelphia can level the series and bring the momentum back home for what will be a pivotal Game 6.
