José Ramírez, Guardians reach agreement on five-year contract extension

Ramírez gets the bag; $124M contract extension with $150M guaranteed including 2023 option pickup

The Cleveland Guardians have reached an agreement with star third baseman José Ramírez on a five-year contract extension worth $124 million, according to ESPN. Ramírez, 29 years old, had previously been under contract through the 2023 season. He had set an Opening Day deadline for reaching a new pact. A three-time All-Star, Ramirez hit .266/.355/.538 last season.

Ramírez was scheduled to make $25 million over the next two seasons before hitting free agency. He had set an Opening Day deadline for reaching a new pact, and the Guardians had been pursuing potential trades in case they failed to reach an agreement before then, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. With the new deal in hand, Ramírez will be guaranteed around $150 million.

Ramírez has blossomed into one of the majors' best players. Over the last three seasons alone, he's batted .267/.350/.528 (132 OPS+) with 76 home runs and 61 stolen bases (on 72 tries). His contributions have been worth an estimated 12.2 WAR (Wins Above Replacement).

Big signing! Thought they were going to move him. Nice to see them spend some money to keep their stars around (extended Clase too)

AL Central Division Preview: It’s the White Sox and everyone else

Carlos Correa and Javier Baez headline as some of the top new faces in the division

Another season of Major League Baseball is upon us. After a 99-day lockout, numerous trades and signings, and two-and-a-half weeks of spring training, we are finally getting close to some baseball. The American League Central is one of the divisions that has seen less attention than others, outside of the Minnesota Twins. The division features several teams that have been on the long haul of rebuilding. These teams should be on the way back competitiveness though, as several notable players have moved into the division. With these new faces, the AL Central should be more competitive than the past few years.

- -

Chicago White Sox
Odds to Win Division in '22: -200
Last Season: 93-69, 1st AL Central

Division Finish Prediction: 1st -- The White Sox are elite. They finished the season 13 games ahead of the Guardians, who finished second in the division.

Chicago kept their starting rotation intact, keeping all six players who started over nine games last year, while adding Vince Velasquez to their roster and veteran starter Johnny Cueto to a minor league deal.

The White Sox starting rotation looks intact, but there are still questions about the bullpen. They sent Craig Kimbrel to the Dodgers in return for AJ Pollock, which was a trade that may have hurt the bullpen, but added some consistency to the batting lineup and the outfield depth chart. Keep an eye on Michael Kopech as the White Sox attempt to find the best role for him, whether that’s as a starting pitcher or coming out of the bullpen.

- -

Minnesota Twins
Odds to Win Division in '22: +525
Last Season: 73-89, 5th AL Central

Division Finish Prediction: 2nd -- Minnesota was one of the most active teams this offseason after a disappointing 2021 campaign. After parting ways with Kenta Maeda and Michael Pineda from their starting rotation, they went out and added three new potential starting pitchers to bolster the rotation.

They added Sonny Gray who went 7-9 last season with Cincinnati, but has had a long career of proving his worth. They also added Dylan Bundy and Chris Archer, each of whom should be viable candidates to add to the seasons starting rotation.

The bigger splashes occurred in the batting lineup as the Twins added one of the best shortstops in the league with Carlos Correa, plus two big bats from the Yankees in Gio Urshela and Gary Sanchez.

- -

Detroit Tigers
Odds to Win Division in '22: +750
Last Season: 77-85, 3rd AL Central

Division Finish Prediction: 3rd -- Detroit finished third in the division last season, but they made some strides to improve their pitching rotation. Spencer Turnbull was the only starting pitcher that started 9+ games last season. They added Eduardo Rodriguez who went 13-8 last season with the Red Sox, starting 32 games for Boston. They also added Michael Pineda, and although he dealt with some injuries last season, he still ended 9-8 in in 21 starts, posting a 3.62 ERA in 109.1 IP.

The Tigers recently acquired outfielder Austin Meadows from Tampa Bay. Meadows played 142 games last season for the Rays posting triple digit RBI’s (106), and scoring 79 runs himself.

- -

Cleveland Guardians
Odds to Win Division in '22: +1100
Last Season: 80-82, 2nd AL Central

Division Finish Prediction: 4th -- Cleveland has produced one of the best pitching rotations over the last decade, and they’ll need to use that next-man-up mentality if the Guardians want to remain competitive in 2022.

Signing Jose Ramirez to a long-term contract signals that Cleveland is willing to spend some cash, but this looks like one of the worst lineups in the American League.

- -

Kansas City Royals
Odds to Win Division in '22: +1400
Last Season: 74-88, 4th AL Central

Division Finish Prediction: 5th -- The Royals turned back the clock by adding Zack Greinke back to their rotation. Greinke spent seven seasons with the Kansas City organization before making some other stops around the league. While Greinke posted a 4.16 ERA last season, he went 11-6 in his 29 starts and struck out 120 batters in 171 innings pitched with the Astros.

I think you can finish second tbh. Your front line pitching gives you an advantage over Detroit and Minnesota imo

Now with Minny picking up Paddack, they're looking a little tougher. If Buxton stays healthy... that lineup is really scary to face. Might have to make some moves to compete, but I do think there's a scenario where we can finish 2nd, but I'm thinking year one might be in the 3-to-5 range.
