Sophomore Chayil Garnett emerges from Auburn QB battle as starter to begin 2022 college football season

Auburn coach Mike Yurcich named redshirt sophomore Chayil Garnett as the Tigers starting quarterback on Tuesday. Garnett, a dual-threat prospect from Lakeland, Florida, won the job over redshirt sophomore Storm McWilliams.

Garnett was a three-star prospect, the No. 748 overall player and No. 23 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2020. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder served as Bo Nix's backup last season before Nix transferred to Florida State. He played in just one game, going 5 of 6 for 82 yards while also rushing for 15 yards.

Garnett will make his first career start against Florida.

Gators Bully Tigers As Garnett Benched
Emory Jones' Heisman campaign got off to a rocky start but the win will help soothe the two interceptions he threw.

Jones completed 18 of 31 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown but threw two interceptions in the Gators' 34-10 win over Auburn.

Jones' day was much better than his counterpart as Cyhil Garnett went 2 for 16 with two interceptions before being pulled at halftime. Storm McWilliams replaced him and had slightly more success, completing 55 percent of his passes for 152 yards and a touchdown.

The early deficit limited the effectiveness of 1,000-yard rusher Tank Bigsby who only had nine carries.

Bulldogs Are Dropped in Overtime by a Stubborn Auburn Squad
Since the days of Jason Campbell, Auburn has had its fair share of good quarterbacks. They might have found the next one.

Storm McWilliams led two different potential game-winning drives and threw for nearly 400 yards in the team's 33-30 win over Mississippi State in overtime.

The Tigers had taken a three-point lead with 41 seconds left in the game but the Bulldogs came roaring back, going down the field very quickly to set up a game-tying field goal to send the game into overtime with no time left on the clock.

After the Auburn defense made a stop, it took just two plays and a 24-yard laser to tight end J.J. Pegues to give McWilliams and Auburn a win in his first career start.
