Money in the Grave

Nothing prepares one for the death of a parent, not even a terminal cancer diagnosis. If anything, the prognosis had given him some sort of comfort and false sense of security in knowing how much time he had left with his father. Its called practicing medicine for a reason.

Strom grabbed his last bit of loose clothing items that were left laying around in his room, stuffing them into his laundry bag. He looked around the room once more which resembled how it was just a few months ago when he moved in, devoid of any character or soul. The quiet halls didn't help the somber mood either as Storm threw the bag over his shoulder, grabbed his backpack and rolled his suitcase out of the room.

He slotted them into the back of his father's Suburban, which had plenty of room to spare. Having had experience with having to to deal with the finality of things, it wasn't an emotional scene. He went back into the residence hall, slid his keys underneath the door of the RA, jogged back outside, got into the car and drove off.

"They can't guarantee anything so I'm not going to guarantee you anything but I'd say it's very likely."

"Come on," Storm rolled his eyes, "I know how this goes, they know their 25 or at least their top 30."

"Listen, leaving Auburn was a good first step but.."

"But what?"

"There's still the draft," his agent's response drew a sigh out of Storm, "Listen, I believe you but they still need to know you're all in before investing in you. It's one thing to have to scramble to find a minor league replacement last spring, it's another when they're counting you as an arm in their staff."

"How do I do that, then?"

"Honestly," Andrew rubbed his hands, "A conversation about your commitment, why the change in heart."

"Didn't we already tell them I'm done with football?"

"Yeah but with no why. Like, the coaching staff doesn't give a damn about that stuff but the front office? You'll need buy in there if they're going to put you on their 25 this season. I'm just saying, I don't even know the why."

"Does it matter?"

"It does," Andrew leaned forward, "People need to know that you're serious about this and it's not just some...."

"Yeah," Storm nodded, knowing where Andrew was going with it, "How much do you think we can get?"

"I can probably get you a million, maybe a million and a half. They want you, they just want to know you want them."

"I do," Storm sat up, "I'm done with football. Make the call, we'll meet."

Tigers, former prospect McWilliams agree on extension
After spending last year with the Auburn Tigers as their starting quarterback, former MiLB standout Brandon McWilliams Jr. has signed a one year, $1.5 million extension to stay with the Detroit Tigers.

McWilliams Jr. is trading in his Auburn stripes for some Detroit ones despite having a very successful college campaign last season, breaking the Auburn record for most passing yards in a single season. The death of McWilliams' father led him to him not participating in their bowl loss against N.C. State in the Peach Bowl.

Despite having just one minor league season under his belt, the 20-year old's reported salary is an indication that he will likely be competing for a spot in the Tigers rotation along with Caleb Smith, Casey Mize and Michael Fulmer.

McWilliams Jr. had a 2.92 ERA through ten games in his lone season in the minors.

Not just a fastball artist, McWilliams dazzles in brief Spring Training debut
Matt Wilson -- SI.com

Former Auburn Tigers quarterback Brandon McWilliams Jr. got his first action in a competitive baseball game since 2021 in Tuesday's Detroit Tigers spring training game against the Phillies.

McWilliams came in the ninth with a four-run lead and after surrendering a hit against his first batter, he was nearly perfect. McWilliams utilized both his patented high 90s fastball and his slider, a surprise to many, to force a popup and strike out two consecutive batters, throwing eleven strikes and just three balls in a very efficient outing.

It's just one game but McWilliams' strong performance after a nearly two-year hiatus shows why the Tigers were eager to bring McWilliams not only back into their minor league system but be a potential major leaguer this season. He'll likely start in the bullpen but it might not be too long before McWilliams starts challenging Stephen Yeung and Spence Turnbull.

McWilliams makes Opening Day roster as middle reliever
Detroit Tigers prospect Brandon McWilliams Jr. is officially part of the 25 man roster for the Tigers opening day against the Chicago White Sox.

McWilliams pitched 12.2 innings with eleven strikeouts, no walks and a 2.84 ERA, 5th best among all Detroit pitchers with at least ten innings pitched during Spring Training. McWilliams had two tough outings against the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates with Yasiel Puig going yard against him early in Spring Training.

McWilliams was consistent in his other short appearances, a welcomed sight that despite a two-year layoff, the once promising prospect is still just that and even more. With the Tigers expected to be one of the league's worst teams, there is a path for McWilliams to potentially crack the starting rotation this season due to his high upside.

Brandon McWilliams Jr. to make first career start against Oakland
Detroit Tigers bullpen arm Brandon McWilliams Jr, one of the team's top prospects, is expected to make his first career start tomorrow against the Oakland Athletics.

McWilliams has pitched eighteen innings this season, recording nineteen strikeouts to go with his 5.00 ERA. Outside of a two game stretch in May against Colorado and Arizona where he allowed a combined five runs in less than one full inning pitched, McWilliams has been one of their better middle relievers this season with a hold and a win to his name.

With a 26-43 record, it makes sense that the Tigers have now started to look forward to their future and McWilliams could potentially be a major piece of this.
